9th Grade Victim Raped with Broomstick, Says Prosecutor

A Berkshire County prosecutor outlined some details of an alleged brutal sexual assault involving Somerville High School students.

After being raped with a broomstick, a Somerville High School freshman, crying, bled on the bathroom floor of a camp cabin in Western Massachusetts.

That's what a Berkshire County prosecutor said in court Tuesday, according to Boston.com and other media reports.

Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Rachael T. Eramo outlined the allegations during the arraignment of 17-year-old Galileo Mondol, a Somerville High School junior who allegedly took part in the broomstick attack. He was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court. Two other Somerville High School juniors have also been accused. Because they're minors their names have not been released.

According to media reports, Eramo described the alleged sexual assault:

Mondol and two other Somerville High School juniors, soccer players participating in a school-organized sports camp, allegedly entered a camp cabin filled with freshmen boys and said, "We're going to pick someone. It's you, no it's you, no it's you," before grabbing one of the boys, BostonHerald.com reported.

The victim was "grabbed, forced to get on all fours. His pants were removed from him, and a broomstick was placed up his anus," Eramo said—NECN broadcast footage of her statement.

Although Mondol, at first, told the others to stop, he then allegedly changed his mind and said, "I want to have a crack at that," Boston.com reported.

After the attack, the three juniors allegedly assaulted two other freshmen, but those boys fought off the attack and weren't raped with the broomstick.

Mondol allegedly told the victims and witnesses, "You better keep your mouth shut," and later the three alleged assailants left intimidating messages on Facebook and Twitter to keep the freshmen quiet, Boston.com reported, talking about Eramo's description of the attack.

Mondol's attorney, William Korman, said his client was in the wrong place at the wrong time and tried to stop the attack.

"The victim said my client had nothing to do with it. The co-defendant said my client had nothing to do with it," Korman said on NECN.

"It's the victim himself who said my client did everything he could to stop this assault," Korman said, according to BostonHerald.com.

Mondol was held on $100,000 cash bail and faces a dangerousness hearing on Friday, Boston.com reported.

The other two defendants in the case are minors, meaning their names won't be released, and they were set to be arraigned in Berkshire Juvenile Court.

Mondol is being held in isolation, according to WHDH.

Meanwhile, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, who attended the sports camp as an assistant football coach, spoke about the incident on WBUR, calling it "horrific." He cited the victims' bravery in coming forward and said, "It will not define their spirit and character."
