Sneak Peek of 'Odysseo's' Massive Tent in Somerville
Cavalia's "Odysseo" is staged in the world's largest touring tent. Here's a look at the venue a week before opening night, and Artistic Director Normand Latourelle describes the performance.
The largest touring tent in the world, housing a massive, state-of-the-art stage, is nearing completion in Somerville's Assembly Square.
It will be home to Cavalia's Odysseo beginning Aug. 7.
The colossal equestrian show aims to immerse audience members in a dream world of humans and horses traversing the globe together on a giant odyssey, according to Normand Latourelle, artistic director of the show.
Latourelle, who is also one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil, said about 65 horses and 50 artists—acrobats, riders, dancers, musicians and aerialists—will perform in the Somerville show.
The main tent is 125 feet tall and contains an 80-ton technical grid, a three-story "mountain" of earth, and a stage that floods with 80,000 gallons of water.
We got a sneak peek at the huge venue, set up on the former IKEA parcel in Assembly Square, as construction on the tent and grounds were nearing completion.
