Mother's Israeli Military Training Kicked In During Fire

A woman with Israeli military training woke up her daughter and her daughter's roommate when she heard the sound of a snake.

Carine Margez, a young woman from the south of France staying in Somerville to do an internship, was asleep Thursday morning when her Calvin Street building caught on fire.

Her mother knocked on her door to wake up Margez and Margez's roommate, and they ran outside, Margez said.

She said her mother had served in the Israeli military, and her training taught her that a "snake" sound meant there was a fire outside.

Margez said her mother's training helped save her and her roommate.
