Garbage Truck's Contents Catch Fire in Union Square

Firefighters had to dump the truck's trash on the street in order to extinguish the fire.

A garbage truck dumped trash all over the street in Union Square Wednesday morning after the contents of the truck caught on fire, according to an email from Deputy Chief Charles Breen of the Somerville Fire Department.

Firefighters needed to dump the trash on the street in order to separate the rubbish and extinguish the fire, Breen said..

Luckily, the garbage truck fire happened right in front of the Union Square fire station, on Somerville Avenue.

It happened at around 9:45 a.m., Breen said, and firefighters were still on the scene at around 10:20 a.m.

The fire happened in a Russell Disposal truck. The company is contracted with the city to pick up residential trash.
