An Herbalist's Perspective on Weedy Species: Appreciating the Uninvited Plants in Our Gardens and Cityscapes

Somerville community herbalist and educator Steph Zabel will speak on the often over-looked or under-appreciated plants labeled as "weeds." These so-called invasives or weeds can be foods, medicine, or even help repair damaged ecosystems. This talk seeks to offer another perspective on the wild species that grow all around us. Some of the plants to be viewed in a new light include Japanese Knotweed, Dandelion, Plantain, and Garlic Mustard. In addition to leading herbal classes and running Flowerfolk Herbal Apothecary, Zabel is also the founder and organizer of Herbstalk, a local educational event bringing herbal classes and products to the community.
All Somerville Garden Club meetings are free and the public is invited to attend. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month, and include club announcements, a question-and-answer session, a horticultural lecture or demonstration, and a raffle of donated plants and garden items. Meetings are on the second floor, wheelchair accessible. Parking is available on site, and the building is a short walk from the Davis Square T station.
