Somerville Summer Guide 2013

Information about how to enjoy your summer in Somerville.

Somerville Pools

Somerville has two main pools:

  • Dilboy Memorial Swimming and Wading Pool: Opens July 1
  • Latta Brothers Swimming and Wading Pool: Opens June 29

If you're looking for a swim or a chance to cool off before those pools open, here are some other options:

  • Somerville Kennedy Pool: Run by the Somerville school system for the entire Somerville community, this pool has family swims, adult lap swimming and swimming lessons. Call (617) 625-6600, extension 6676, for more information.
  • East Cambridge: North Point Spray Deck—Located in North Point park across from the Museum of Science in Cambridge, this spray deck—where the kids can run through water—Opens May 25.
  • Belmont: Beaver Brook Spray Deck—680 Trapelo Rd. Opens May 25.

Activities for Kids

The Somerville Recreation Department offers a number of activities for kids: basketball, baseball, football, swimming, tennis, softball, play time and summer camp. Also, visit the department's calendar, on its main website, to find activities.

Farmers Markets

Somerville has two main farmers markets:

  • Union Square Farmers Market: Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Runs June 1 to Nov. 23.
  • Davis Square Farmers Market: Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Runs May 22 to Nov. 27.

Other Markets

  • Davis Flea: Sells antiques, bric-a-brac, produce and, often, fresh doughnuts. Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opens June 2. It's in the parking lot at the intersection of Buena Vista Road and Holland Street.
  • ASEEMBLED: In Assembly Row, this market has handmade arts and crafts along with food trucks and live music. It runs all day on Saturdays through Sept. 21.

Summer Festivals

  • SomerStreets: Somerville runs five street festivals throughout the summer. Here's the schedule.
  • ArtBeat: This two-day festival in Davis Square features artists, vendors and food. It's on July 19 and July 20.
  • Fireworks: The city's Fourth of July fireworks display always comes a little early. This year the display takes place on June 27 at 6 p.m. at Trum Field. The rain date is June 28.
