On the article Opinion: Phantom Gourmet CEO on Food Trucks

ReplyOne of the key problems is a lack of research on the impact of food trucks. While I can clearly see the concerns, I've yet to find hard data on negative effects on brick and mortar businesses. There's at least one study in the works: http://www.smallbizlabs.com/2012/07/food-trucks-as-business-model-innovation.html. I'm concerned that brick and mortar businesses, instead of thinking how they too can innovate using the tools of mobile food sales -- building their own following on social media, renting their kitchens off hours to these vendors, becoming vendors themselves, seeing what they can learn about the marketplace based on the successes and failures of these vendors.

On the article Is Back-In Angled Parking Working in Union Square?

ReplyI'm not understanding the challenge around backing into the parking spaces. For parallel parking it's the same challenge and people seem to make that work. You know, the ol' hosey of the space -- put on your blinker, slow down, pull over, and the people behind figure out what you're trying to do and leave some room. Am I missing something?

On the article Poll: Do You Want Food Trucks in Somerville?
Mimi Graney
12:40 pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2012
ReplyWhile it can seem counter intuitive clustering business together helps everyone do better. So food trucks in Union and Davis would help the trucks and the brick and mortar businesses. Clustering the trucks together also helps. Mobile vendors are a great launching pad for new, growing businesses and for established businesses (hello Kickass Cupcakes and Redbones) to expand their reach into new neighborhoods. It allows for seasonal shifts - a year round ice cream store might not make it in Union but I can imagine a food truck with awesome gelato being a hit summer nights among the restaurants. And late night too -- food trucks help with other kitchens are closed, the staff serving as "eyes on the street." The good thing about these kinds of mobile efforts is that they're flexible -- it's possible to experiment. It's worked all over the country to build vibrancy. Welcoming mobile food vendors to Somerville will help expand the reputation we're growing for innovation, tasty food, lively streets.

On the article Your Thoughts: Fare Hikes, Maybe Bus Eliminations Coming to Somerville
Mimi Graney

ReplySome of these cuts are particularly detrimental to Somerville. The #85 is a key line connecting Union Square to MIT and Kendall Square. As we seek to build the economic base here -- that link is important. And the #95, that's vital for the folks at Ten Hills and at Mystic to get to Sullivan Sq. Somerville has a significantly lower level of car ownership and that's facilitated by public transit. Especially in light of the Greenline delays, eliminating bus service is counter to the pedestrian oriented city we're building.

ReplyThe headline for the story says "The author, Steven Nutter, argues the state shouldn't wait to take down the McGrath Highway." But doesn't the article argue exactly the opposite? He says don't bother studying the grounding because the answer is patently obvious to him and it should be grounded immediately. He says yes to the grounding, no to the study.

ReplyThere's a sign over on Summer Street at Nunziato Field -- provides a real wake up call on the speed there. Limit is 25 mph and feels like a crawl compared to the typical zip on that road. Definitely a perfect place to get folks to slow down -- between the soccer field, Growing Center and leash-free park, not to mention two nearby schools -- really helpful to account for pedestrians and cyclists here.
