Thursday: 'Walkable City' Author, Jeff Speck, At Somerville Theatre

Speck's book deals with urban design, parking, Main Street business, trees and what makes a good city. Some of his ideas could impact Somerville.

Jeff Speck, former design director at the National Endowment for the Arts, who's currently serving as a consultant on the "Somerville by Design" initiative, is speaking at Somerville Theatre Thursday night. Speck will discuss his latest book, "Walkable City:  How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time." The book discusses why "walkable" cities are better and more economically resilient than driving cities, and it prescribes ways to make cities more walkable. Anyone concerned about how the areas around the new Green Line stations could be developed should stop by the Armory today (11/29), either between 11 am to 2 pm or 4:30 to 9:30 pm, to look at potential design plans and comment on them. (These are drop-in times, not a whole program.)   more ›

POLL: Is Somerville Walkable?

Somerville was recently listed as the 10th most walkable city in the nation. How walkable do you think Somerville is?

The website walkscore.com recently listed Somerville as the 10th most walkable city in the United States. That's based on cities with a population of at least 10,000. Of cities that are Somerville's size or larger—cities with a population of 75,000 or more—Somerville was the 5th most walkable city in the country, and Cambridge was ranked number one. What do you think? Is Somerville a walkers paradise, or were the good people at walkscore.com smoking something fishy when they compiled the walk scores?

I've lived here since college (18 years ago!) and Somerville is and has been very walkable. HOWEVER, I would like to car driving population to be more CrossWalk savy. And I would like the city (polices, aldermen etc) to have more of a presence enforcing CrossWalk Laws. A Public Education on CrossWalk Laws would be very welcomed.   more ›
