The task force will look at short-term and long-term needs of the aging high school building.
Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has established a new task force to evaluate the condition of Somerville's aging high school and make recommendations about its long-term future, including the possibility of building a new school at a different site. According to Jackie Rossetti, a spokesperson for the city, the task force will first meet sometime after the new year. She didn't know how long it would take the task force to make recommendations, but suspected it would be sometime in the upcoming year. The task force will consider immediate needs to the high school's building and facilities, and also long-term needs. Rossetti stressed the high school is structurally sound and safe for students, but the building is also old and crumbling. A …

It's the second year in a row Somerville will compete on the show.
Somerville High School's trivia team, for the second straight year, has made it onto WGBH's "High School Quiz Show," according to an announcement from WGBH. The Somerville team will be one of 16 from across the state to compete on the trivia show, which airs in February. To earn a spot in the final 16, Somerville competed against 94 other Massachusetts public high schools on Nov. 4 during "Super Sunday," when all the teams took an identical oral quiz consisting of 100 questions. The 16 teams with the top scores were then invited to compete on the quiz show. Somerville is one of seven teams returning to the show after appearances last year. Last year, Somerville was knocked out of the tournament in the first round by Rockport. Here are the …

Somerville plays Westford Academy at Dilboy Stadium at 6 p.m.
The Somerville High School boys soccer team faces off against Westford Academy Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's North Division 1 Tournament. Somerville, which earned the second seed in the tournament with a 16-0-2 record, defeated Billerica on Sunday to move to the quarterfinals. Westford is the 10th seed in the tournament, and it defeated seventh-seed Lowell to make it to the quarterfinals. "The key's going to be discipline," said George Scarpelli, coach of the Somerville team. He said Westford fields a strong defensive unit, so Somerville will have to "take advantage of the chances we get." Somerville was knocked out of the tournament last year in the quarterfinals after the game …

Somerville High School's annual college fair takes place Monday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Somerville High School Field House. For 31 years, the culinary arts program has prepared Somerville students for careers in professional kitchens.
The Highlander Cafe, run by students in Somerville High School's culinary arts program, officially opened to the public Thursday. Tom Cardon started the program 31 years ago, and at a soft opening Wednesday he explained that the program trains students to become professional chefs and bakers. At Highlander Cafe, about 30 students work in the kitchen and run the house. Cardon designed the kitchen to meet industry standards so students can enter professional kitchens and know their way around. Leo Desimone, vocational director at Somerville High School, said the Highlander Cafe experience is like "real life." What's more, partnerships with nearby institutions have sent recent culinary arts program students to some well-known places, such as …

The ubiquitous college guide came to Somerville and profiled eight students. The issue hits newsstands Tuesday.
The 2013 U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" issue, which is scheduled to be on shelves Tuesday, features some local faces. The popular issue of the magazine, which ranks colleges and universities, came to Somerville High School and profiled eight members of the class of 2012 for an article titled, "Success! How They Made It." Unfortunately, the article is not available online (although the college rankings are), so you'll need to get your hands on a hard copy to see the profiles. Somerville Public Schools got an early copy of the magazine and let Somerville Patch peek at the article. "This spring, U.S. News visited Somerville High School near Boston to ask members of the Class of 2012 to talk about their journeys and pass on any …

John Oteri, Somerville High School's new headmaster, talked about the upcoming school year. Nearly 20 percent of the school's staff are new, and there are some new programs, too, he said.
When Somerville High School students begin the school year on Sept. 5, they'll notice a number of new faces at the school. To begin with, they'll have a new headmaster. John Oteri isn't exactly a new face, having served as an assistant principal since 2007 and, before that, as a social studies teacher since 1999, but this is his first fall as headmaster. "It's been great; it's been a wild ride," Oteri said of his first two months on the job. He officially took over from former headmaster, Tony Ciccariello, on July 1. "Everyone's very enthusiastic," he said of starting the new school year. His first two months have been busy. "We've done a tremendous amount of hiring here," he said. In fact, Somerville High School will have 26 people who …
