City Happily Surprised by Results of Recycling Change (Leia em Português)

On Oct. 14, the City began testing a new way for residents to recycle. Households in part of Ward 5 were issued trash-can-sized carts and asked to toss all their recyclables into the one container—no sorting required. It's called single-stream recycling. Just five weeks into the test run, City officials are awed by the results: recycling by participants has increased nearly 60 percent. Increase in recycling topped expectations "We have just five weeks of data, but from Oct. 14 to Nov. 10, we averaged an increase of over two tons of recycled materials, which actually represents almost a 60 percent increase in recycling as a result of the program, which is actually much better than we expected," said David Lutes of the Somerville Office of …

Frankly, I would be willing to pay for the collection container if container cost is a stumbling block. Single-stream recycling is SO convenient and easy--I sure hope it is adopted city-wide by Somerville!   more ›
