Letter to Editor: Jehlen Praises Fast14 I-93 Highway Project

State Senator Pat Jehlen says this summer's Fast14 project proves ambitious infrastructure projects are possible: "We don’t often read about the good things when it comes to transportation projects," she writes.

Somerville State Sen. Pat Jehlen and Sen. Thomas McGee, chair of the Massachusetts General Court's joint committee on transportation, have praised this summer's Fast14 highway project on Interstate 93. "Here is an excellent example of a state government agency being pro-active and addressing an obvious problem in a creative way that saves both time and money," they write in an op-ed piece. What's more, they write, "[T]he price tag is a little under $100 million dollars which is a relatively small amount of money for a project of this size." Read their entire op-ed piece here: "Last August, a giant hole opened on a bridge on I-93 in Medford.  Rush hour traffic came to an abrupt halt and the usual heavy, slow evening commute came to a …

'Fast14' I-93 Construction Project Enters Final Leg

Work to replace the 14th a final bridge superstructure slated for August 12 to August 15.

The end is near. The Fast14 rapid bridge replacement project on I-93 in Medford will replace its 14th and final bridge this weekend. As usual, the work will begin Friday at 7:45 p.m. and continue through 5 a.m. Monday. It will narrow I-93 to two lanes between Exit 28 in Somerville and Exit 36 in Stoneham. This weekend's work will replace a bridge that takes I-93 South over Route 16. As result, Route 16 will be closed to both directions of traffic near the highway. Southbound I-93 on-ramps will be closed at exits 31, 32 and 34. Exit 33 will be available for local traffic only. Fellsway will be used as the primary local detour route for the weekend. Drivers coming from the eastside of I-93 on Route 16 will be sent to Route 38 to access the …

Construction to Slow I-93, Close Webster St. and Mystic River Channel

This weekend's "Fast14" construction will be on the overpass above Webster Street. It is expected to cause delays in both directions on I-93 north of Boston.

Construction on I-93 this weekend will close one local road, narrow the highway to two lanes and close a channel of the Mystic River to boaters. Work continues this weekend on the on-going "Fast14" rapid bridge replacement project. From 7:45 p.m. Friday, July 29 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, I-93 will be narrowed to two lanes from Exit 28 in Somerville to Exit 36 in Stoneham. Access to and from many of the ramps on I-93 South in this area will be restricted. This week's work will replace structures that carry the highway south over Webster Street and the Mystic River. As result, Webster Street will be closed and the Mystic River channel near the highway will be closed to boaters. The on-ramps to I-93 South from Fellsway West at Exit 34, …
