Former Winter Hill Gang Boss to be Arraigned on Extortion Charges Tuesday

Howie Winter is accused of demanding money from businessmen who made a loan without consent from the North End.

Howie Winter, former boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, was scheduled to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday morning on extortion charges, according to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office. Winter, 83, of Millbury, will be arraigned with James Melvin, 70, of Braintree, the announcement says. According to the district attorney's office, Winter and Melvin allegedly tried to extort tens of thousands of dollars from two businessmen, making threatening statements and phone calls and leaving a threatening note at one victim's home. The extortion allegedly took place earlier in 2012. It started when two businessmen made a loan to a lawyer, according to the district attorney's office and police reports. …

Bulger's Lawyer Says Alleged Mobster Had Immunity, Wants All Charges Dropped

The trial date in the case against James "Whitey" Bulger has been pushed back from November to March of 2013, according to media reports.

Lawyers for James "Whitey" Bulger said in a court filing Monday that the notorious alleged mobster had an immunity deal with the government, and therefore charges against him  should be dropped, according to media reports. According to Boston.com, Monday's court filing says Bulger struck a deal with the Department of Justice in the 1970s and "the immunity agreement fully protects the defendant from prosecution for all of the crimes currently under indictment." Bulger, who was a fugitive for 16 years, is charged with being connected to 19 murders, in addition to other charges. On Monday, Bulger's lawyers also said that the judge in the trial, U.S. District Judge Richard A. Stearns, should recuse himself because he was a former federal …

Charges Outlined Against Former Boss of the Winter Hill Gang

Howie Winter was arraigned Somerville District Court Friday and held on $25,000 cash bail.

Howie Winter, the former head of the infamous Winter Hill Gang, was arraigned in Somerville District Court Friday morning on charges of extortion. He's being held on $25,000 cash bail, and he was also ordered to surrender his passport and wear a GPS tracking device. At court proceedings Friday, Stephen Gilpatric, assistant district attorney with the Middlesex District Attorney's office, outlined an alleged extortion scheme in which Winter and an associate are accused of meeting with victims in Medford and Randolph, leaving a handwritten note at a victim's home and making expletive-laden threats with references to Winter's connections to organized crime in the North End. Howie Winter, 83, former head of Somerville's infamous Winter Hill Gang, has been arrested and charged with extortion, according to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office. Winter was arrested last night at his home in Millbury, the announcement says. A second man, James Melvin, 70, of Braintree, was also arrested in connection to the alleged extrotion scheme. Winter was the former boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang in Somerville, once the most powerful crime organization in New England outside La Cosa Nostra. James "Whitey" Bulger, who reputedly followed Winter as the gang's leader, made the criminal organization infamous. Whitey Bulger's Girlfriend Pleads Guilty

Catherine Greig admitted to harboring a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.

Catherine Greig, longtime girlfriend to reputed Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, pleaded guilty in federal court this afternoon to conspiracty to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. In pleading guilty, Greig admitted to having a close personal relationship with Bulger, fleeing from the Boston area with him in 1995 and assisting him while he hid from authorities for 16 years. Greig admitted to using false identities to conceal herself during her time in hiding. Bulger and Greig were ultimately arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 22, 2011.
