Six Great Sledding Spots in the Somerville Area

With snow on the ground, now is the time to take advantage of these sledding hot spots.

With snow still lingering from Saturday's storm, now's the time to do some sledding. Several locations in the Somerville area are perfect winter wonderlands. However, you'll need to bring your own sledding equipment to these five popular sledding destinations: 1) Tufts University Somerville/Medford:The hills at Tufts are prime for sledding. 2) Powder House Park Somerville. Just make sure you don't fly off the hill into Broadway. 3) Fellsmere Pond Off Fellsway East, near Medford/Malden line: Accessible on the Fellsway East, this area near Fellsmere Park is an old favorite with people from the area for sledding and snow tubing. 4) Bear Hill Golf Course 2 North St., Stoneham: Bear Hill, which is a nine-hole golf course during the warm weather…

When my kids were young, we used to go the Robbins Farm Park across the street from the Brackett Elementary School in Arlington Heights. It was safe and had two hills, a short one for beginners and the very young, and a much longer one for the thrill seekers.   more ›

Winter Storm Watch From Wednesday Through Thursday

Three-to-five inches of snow could fall between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon.

Our snowless luck may have run out. Somerville could see 3-5 inches of snow starting Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon, according to a winter storm watch issued this morning by the National Weather Service (NWS). With fluctuating temperatures—a Wednesday high of 38 and Thursday high near 43—the snow should also mix in with sleet and freezing rain at times, the NWS said, although colder temperatures could linger longer than currently forecast, resulting in less sleet and freezing rain and more snow. "Snow is currently expected to overspread southern New England Wednesday afternoon and transition to a wintry mix Wednesday evening," the NWS statement read. "The heaviest precipitation should occur from last Wednesday into Thursday…

On Two Wheels

Get Your Snowed-on Bike Back in Good Riding Condition

Clean it, lubricate it, wax it and keep it parked inside.

If you left your bicycle outside this weekend, susceptible to damage from snow, dirt and ice-melting salts, there are a few things you should do to get it back into good working order, according to local experts.  Clean it, and keep it clean. Tyler Oulton, who owns Ball Square's Paramount Bicycle shop, writes on his website that cleaning a bicycle is the most important part of winter maintenance. Taking mild soap and a sponge to the frame will not only remove dirt, he says, but also get you to check for damage or deterioration. He recommends looking for wear or rust on the break pads, correct wheel alignment, broken spokes and cracks in the frame.  Then to keep you and your bike as clean as possible, he writes, install either full or clip-…

Poll With Photos: Is Warm Winter Pleasant or Unsettling?

We got a dusting last night, but compare that to last year. How does the contrast make you feel?

It finally happened: The first snow of the winter. Sort of. A light dusting, really. A year ago this week, Somerville was buried under snow, having suffered the third major storm of the season. Mountains of snow covered sidewalks; tree limbs fell over; residents shoveled and shoveled and shoveled. This year, on the other hand, temperatures reached 60 degrees on Saturday—nearly a record warm—and last night's dusting was the closest thing we've had to real winter. To refresh your memory about the storm that hit Somerville a year ago this week, and to compare those scenes to this year, check out the photos. We wouldn't be New Englanders if we didn't have an opinion about the weather. So, what do you think of this year's winter so far? Are you…
