Some Union Square Restaurants Closed Friday Night Due to Water Failure

Water was shut off to a restaurant-heavy section of Union Square late Friday afternoon, just as chefs were preparing for the Friday rush.

A part of Union Square that is home to several restaurants lost water for nearly three hours Friday afternoon, according to Thomas Champion, a spokesperson for the city of Somerville. The water failure caused some top restaurants in the area to close for Friday night. Champion said something called a "water gate" failed at about 3:15 p.m., cutting off water to the area around Union Square Plaza, which has a number of restaurants, including The Independent, Precinct, Journeyman and Casa B. Workers from the Department of Public Works and the department's contractors fixed the problem by about 6 p.m., Champion said. Water Main Break Affects Some Buildings, Slows Traffic

An early morning water main break near Foss Park has cut off water to two homes and a business. Repair work has slowed traffic.

Two homes and one business near Foss Park have been without water Monday due to an early morning water main break. According to Jaclyn Rossetti, a spokesperson for the city of Somerville, a small piece of pipe at Mystic Avenue and Wheatland Street broke at about 2 a.m. Monday, cutting off water to a home and business in the area. Workers completed the repair to that rupture at around noon Monday, but when they turned the water back on, they discovered a second piece of pipe in need of repair, according to Rossetti. The second repair has cut off water to two homes and a business, she said, and water was expected to be back on between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday.
