Girls Volleyball Coach Reflects Following Postseason Loss to Newton North

Somerville High’s Steven Walker: season "a huge turning point for our program."

Despite the Somerville girls’ volleyball team’s 3-0 loss to top-seeded Newton North Tuesday night in the MIAA Central-East Division 1 Quarter Finals, Somerville girls’ volleyball coach Steven Walker had nothing but positive things to say about his squad. “I look at it as a great source of pride,” Walker said of the Highlanders’ 11-7 regular season. “It’s my most successful season as a coach ... and from what we can gather, it's the most successful season that Somerville’s had in quite some time.” Walker said his team met all of the goals they set out to accomplish: a winning record overall, a strong placement at the Greater Boston League tournament, and a solid performance in the MIAA postseason. Girls' Volleyball: Cambridge Rindge & Latin Sweeps Somerville For GBL Champsionship

Falcons Cap Undefeated Greater Boston League Season with Title

The Cambridge Rindge & Latin Falcons overcame a five-point deficit in their first game Friday, then took control of the next two, sweeping the Somerville High School Highlanders in three games to win the GBL Championship at the Somerville High Field House. Cambridge’s win capped an undefeated regular season within the Greater Boston League, including two 3-0 sweeps of the Highlanders. “I don’t just coach for the year, I coach for the program,” Cambridge coach Kelley Leary said. “I try to keep it flowing.” Just like their match against the Falcons on Oct. 19, the Highlanders started their first game strong, going up 5-0 thanks in part to a kill and subsequent ace from senior Lorenza Etienne. Volleyball: Prospect Hill Academy Beats Boston Collegiate Charter School

Wizards remain unbeaten behind better serving and aggressive passing

The Prospect Hill Academy volleyball team is making strides in its transition from a club team to a varsity squad. On Thursday afternoon, the Prospect Hill Wizards beat the Boston Collegiate Hurricanes in two games at Cambridge’s Moore Youth Center, and the team showed improvements in its serving game, poise and communication. Though the first game began with back-and-forth scoring, the Wizards took control midway through. The Wizards played more vocal volleyball, constantly calling for the ball and aggressively passing. “In practice, we’re always asking them to focus and cheer each other on or help each other out,” PHA coach Suzie Ramirez said. With the first day of school upon us, Somerville Patch will be previewing all eight fall sports programs at Somerville High School. Unsure how the Highlanders did in 2010?
