A performance at Somerville Theatre on April 6 kicks off a month of events and activities designed to promote productive, healthy life choices among Somerville's teens.
Teen Empowerment, a youth services organization in East Somerville, has been in the city for eight years, and on April 6 it kicks off "peace month" in with a performance at Somerville Theatre. The performance is the creation of about 30 teens who work with Teen Empowerment. It's "all original material," said Jaime Lederer, program director at the organization. Every year Teen Empowerment hosts a peace conference in Somerville, inviting young people to participate in discussions and exercises about issues affecting their lives—violence, drugs, school, family difficulties, bullying, and other matters. The meeting was part of an effort break down stereotypes police and teenagers have about each other.
Somerville teenagers and four of the Somerville Police Department's newest officers met Tuesday for a "discussion session." Organized by the police department and Somerville's Teen Empowerment, the session was designed to let the two groups, often at odds, get to know each other and break down stereotypes. Teen Empowerment sent some photos of the meeting, and here they are.

Police officers and teenagers from around Greater Boston came to Somerville to play basketball and showcase the friendly relationships they've developed.
Somerville police cheered on young athletes during a Saturday basketball tournament at Trum Field aimed at forging a friendly relationships between officers and teenagers. The fourth annual Metro Mayors Basketball Tournament drew teens from Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Quincy, Revere, Somerville and Winthrop. Members of Somerville’s Teen Empowerment center competed against the other Greater Boston youth organizations. Teen Empowerment encourages teenagers to band together with police to reduce crime and violence.
