Stop & Shop Acquires Johnnie's Foodmaster Lease, But Plans Unknown

Is Stop & Shop planning to open a store in West Somerville, or does it have other plans for the former Johnnie's Foodmaster site?

Stop & Shop, a supermarket company, has acquired the lease at the former Johhnie's Foodmaster site in West Somerville, but Stop & Shop has not announced what it plans to do with the site. "I don't have any news I can share yet," said Suzi Robinson, a spokesperson for Stop & Shop's New England Division. She said she's hoping to announce news about the West Somerville site sometime during the week of January 28. Johnnie's Foodmaster was a supermarket at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway that closed in November of 2012 after Foodmaster, which had 10 stores in Eastern Massachusetts, closed all its sites. Readers Like Whole Foods, Don't Want it to Replace Johnnie's Foodmaster

A look at how some people have responded to the possibility of Whole Foods coming to Beacon Street.

When it comes to supermarkets, Somerville Patch readers like Johnnie's Foodmaster. In response to news that Whole Foods was looking to acquire the Foodmaster on Beacon Street, near Inman Square, some readers thought Whole Foods should look for another location. "I love Foodmaster, and I also shop regularly at Whole Foods just a few blocks away on Prospect Street in Cambridge. People in my neighborhood need to be able to walk to a store with good prices, and Whole Foods will never be that store," commented Daniel Gewerrtz. "Why don't they just take over the old Star Market on Broadway? It's empty and has a big parking lot," wrote Alicia Byrd. Johnnies Foodmaster was a great store many years ago. I don't know why the last few years it has gone down, maybe they don't have anyone to take it over either in the family or to sell. We don't have answers to that yet. But 50 years ago it was the best around. There is a need for Whole Foods for those who wish to shop there the same as Market Basket. Whole Foods is looking to acquire Jonnie's Foodmaster markets in the Boston area, including in Somerville. What do you think?

Johnnie's Foodmaster on Beacon Street in Somerville could become Whole Foods, according to a report on Boston.com. The news site reports the texas-based upmarket supermarket chain is in talks to buy or lease six of the 10 Johnnie's Foodmaster sites in Arlington, Charlestown, Brookline, South Weymouth, Melrose and Somerville. In Somerville, Whole Foods is interested in acquiring the Johnnie's Foodmaster on Beacon Street, near Inman Square, according to the report. Read the Boston.com story here.
