Readers' Ideas About Davis Square Streetscape Improvements Vary Widely

What some commenters said about planned changes to Davis Square's streets and sidewalks.

Based on readers' comments, there's little agreement about how—or even if—to improved Davis Square's streets, sidewalks and public spaces. The city held a series of meetings over the summer about streetscape improvements to the square, and some of the recommendations include altering the shape of roads and sidewalks, improving traffic-light signals and using materials other than brick for sidewalks. While some commenters welcomed changes to Davis Square, others feared change could make life worse for drivers and pedestrians. "What's with all the traffic changes … the ideas don't sound good to me. Don't fix what ain't broken," said Somerville Home Owner. Nancy wrote, "Adding lights? Removing the slip lane? Narrowing traffic lanes on Elm? I …

Thanks for the diagrams... it makes more sense and it looks better than I imagined. But I'm still concerned that traffic on Highland will get backed up more.   more ›

Will Davis Square Keep Its Brick Sidewalks?

Planners Tuesday night discussed what changes to Davis Square the city might undertake in the next couple of years.

Should Davis Square's sidewalks be replaced with new bricks or converted to another material, like concrete pavers, concrete with brick accents of even concrete with colorful glass mixed in? That was one of the topics under consideration Tuesday evening at a meeting about improving Davis Square's streets, the fourth and final such meeting held this summer. The city is planning to make improvements to the square's streetscape in the next couple of years, though there isn't a precise timeline yet. Participants at Tuesday's meeting also discussed what style of benches, tables, trash bins and lights to put in square. Planners presented some recommendations, based on earlier meetings, for changes to the area's streetscape. Some of the most …

Davis Square Needs Better Parking and Biking Options, Say Readers

We asked Somerville Patch readers how to improve the Davis Square streetscape. Here's what some of them said.

The city is planning streetscape improvements in Davis Square, and it's hosting a series of meetings on the matter this summer. More here. Everything is on the table: changes to sidewalks, roads, bike paths, crosswalks, traffic lights, bus terminals and more. We asked Somerville Patch readers what they thought needed improving. Kevin Thomas Crowley said Davis Square is irrelevant to the average Somerville citizen with its "bars, bistros, banks and wallet busting restaurants." That said, Crowley commented, "I hate to even suggest it … but the square needs a parking garage on its outskirts." "Just think of all the people who want to come there if it were not an almost impossible place to park," he commented CP Kostos agreed, suggesting a "2-…

You can park in the lot, but the structure underneath the lot is not open at night. The lot does have a somewhat complicated park and pay system that doesn't always work. The city should do something about that.   more ›

You Say: How Should Somerville Improve Davis Square?

The city is hosting a series of meetings this summer to discuss streetscape improvements to Davis Square. What changes, if any, do you think should happen in Davis Square?

Somerville is looking to improve the streets and sidewalks of Davis Square, and the city is hosting a series of meetings this summer to seek the public's advice about it. Read more here. Previously scheduled meetings included a site tour on June 21 and a design discussion on June 26. If you attended one of these meetings, we'd love to hear your report. Upcoming Davis Square-planning events include a community meeting on July 17 and a public presentation on Aug. 7. Some people have already commented on Somerville Patch about what they'd like to see in Davis Square: Jonah Petri, for instance, had a few suggestions, which included prioritizing the Community Path within the square, improving traffic-light timing and keeping the traffic islands…

Make the square more inviting to customers. Parking meters past 6PM seem like a money grab. How do you expect paying customers to enjoy dinner, drinks and a movie if they're worrying about pumping a meter until 8PM? No the answer is not more automated meters that don't require cash. the answer is sane parking regulations that encourage people to come and spend time and money in the square.   more ›
