Players wearing black arm bands held a moment of silence before Wednesday morning's game.
The Somerville High School and Medford High School softball teams held a moment of silence before their Wednesday morning game. They remembered Krystle Campbell, who was killed in Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon, and other victims of the bombings. Campbell was a 2001 graduate of Medford High School, and she had strong family ties in Somerville, having live in Somerville to care for her grandmother. Members of the Medford High School softball team will wear black arm bands and dedicate the rest of their season to Campbell's memory. The two teams held a moment of silence before their game at Tufts Park, with players on each side locking arms along the baselines. A number of Somerville residents are running the 117th Boston Marathon on Monday. The Boston Marathon website can provide a list of everyone from the city who's running—although on Friday the website, for some reason, was only displaying Somerville runners whose last names began with the letters A through F. The top women's soccer team begins the 2013 season in Somerville.
The Boston Breakers launch their 2013 campaign Sunday with a game against the Washington Spirit at Dilboy Stadium. The Breakers are now part of a new professional women's soccer league and the team has top national-team players from the United States, Canada and Mexico, including Sydney Leroux and Heather O'Reilly (United States) Rhian Wilkinson and Adriana Leon (Canada), and Anisa Guajardo and Cecilia Santiago (Mexico). You can see the whole roster here. What's more, the team has strengthened its ties with Somerville in the offseason. The Mayor's Fitness Challenge kicks off Saturday, and a promotional video features city staffers … well, maybe you should see for yourself.
The Mayor's Fitness Challenge, in which teams and individuals compete to lose weight and improve their health, begins Saturday and runs through June 20. The kickoff event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Somerville High School gym, with music, fitness demonstrations, family activities, a health and fitness fair and the opportunity to join the challenge. On Friday the Fitness Challenge Facebook page revealed a promotional video featuring a number of city staffers getting some exercise. In the video, several of them are wearing period workout outfits, although it's hard to tell exactly what period we're talking about.
