Snow Emergency Ends at 8 P.M., Schools Open Wednesday

Somerville's snow emergency will end Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. and schools will be open on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Residents have until 10 p.m. to move their cars from municipal lots.

Somerville is finally getting back to normal after the Blizzard of '13. The snow emergency will be lifted as of 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the city announced in an email, and Somerville Public Schools will be in session on Wednesday, Feb. 13. If you parked your car in a municipal lot due to the snow emergency, you have until 10 p.m. on Tuesday night to move your car so plows can clear snow from the lots. The city also reminds residents that  while parking on the even side of the street will be allowed after the parking ban is lifted, the law requires at least 10 feet of passage for emergency vehicles. So take care on those side roads that might still be narrow due to snow banks on either side—you could get a ticket or towed without that 10 feet of…

Somerville Public School Volunteer, Instructor Recognized for Commitment to Arts

Clare Goldsmith, a volunteer, and Barbara Marder have been teaching children at the Kennedy School about the creative process.

  The following was sent by Somerville Public Schools: SPS Volunteer and Teacher in the Spotlight:  Commitment to the Arts Somerville Public Schools celebrates Volunteer Clare Goldsmith and Visual Arts Instructor Barbara Marder.   Ms. Goldsmith began volunteering with Somerville Public Schools in 2008 and has been joining Ms. Marder in her K-8 Kennedy School art room every Monday since then.   Ms. Goldsmith returns every week because she enjoys "being part of the spontaneity and creativity, and seeing the different ways students can express themselves through art."  A photographer, collector and painter, Clare has also been delighted with the historical perspective gained through Ms. Marder's arts classes, where projects are integrated …

Monday: Kennedy School Honors Volunteer Janet McGourty

McGourty has worked with special needs kids at the elementary school, according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools.

Somerville Public Schools to Share in $1 Million Statewide Early Education Grant

The funded initiative works to streamline and strengthen early education.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced Friday that $1 million in grants will go toward coordinating partnerships between early learning and elementary education programs. Somerville is one of the five communities receiving part of the funds.  The initiative, called “Pre-Kindergarten to Third Grade Alignment for Educational Success,” supports school districts and community-based early education and care providers in working together to streamline early education in Massachusetts in hopes of improving academic performance and closing achievement gaps.  This initiative is part of the four-year Massachusetts Early Learning Plan, funded by a $50 million federal grant won the state won in December 2011.    “Education is Massachusetts’ calling card around …

Winter Hill Community School Gets New Assistant Principal

Ian Charles, who previously served as interim assistant principal at the Healey School, will replace Pat O'Connor as assistant principal of the Winter Hill Community School. O'Connor retired after 40 years with the school.

The Winter Hill Community School, which recently became an "innovation school," a designation that allows administrators and school leaders more flexibility in terms of setting school policy and the curriculum, is getting a new assistant principal. Chad Mazza, who was named the school's new principal this spring, has selected Ian Charles, who comes from the Arthur D. Healey School, for the role, according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools. Charles replaces Pat O’Connor, who retired after 40 years with the school. Winter Hill School Approved as Innovation School

The Innovation School model gives autonomy to school administrators to manage curriculum, staff and budgets.

The Somerville School Committee officially voted Wednesday to designate the Winter Hill Community School as an "Innovation School," according to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools. Innovation Schools were created by the Achievement Gap Act of 2010 and they give teachers and administrators more flexibility in managing curriculums, staffing, budgets and school policies. Somerville Schools Superintendent Tony Pierantozzi said the Winter Hill school will officially be an Innovation School when it opens the new school year this fall. At Innovation Schools, autonomy over the school's governance and curriculum is given to a board of directors, Pierantozzi said. MBTA announces upcoming fare increase, service changes On Wednesday, the MBTA announced a collection of fare increases, service changes and administrative changes designed to close a $161 million gap in its upcoming budget. There will be no service changes in Somerville as a result of this plan, but Somerville riders will pay more to ride the T. We asked riders what they thought of the plan. Margaret DePasquale Named Principal of Next Wave and Full Circle Special Needs Schools

DePasquale has been with the Somerville schools since 2000.

It's been a big week for hiring in the Somerville Public Schools district. On Wednesday, the district announced the hiring or John Oteri as headmaster of Somerville High School and Jill Geiser as principal of the Healey School. Geiser comes to Somerville from a middle school in Lawrence.

On Wednesday morning, Somerville Public Schools announced two major hires. John Oteri, currently an assistant pricinpal at Somerville High School, was named headmaster of that school.
