Somerville firefighters doused flames that broke out between two houses in Magoun Square early Friday morning, according to Chief Kevin Kelleher of the Somerville Fire Department. The fire broke out shortly after midnight at 482 Broadway, Kelleher said. As some of the firefighters dispatched to the area fought the blaze, others searched inside the home after hearing reports that residents were trapped inside, though in fact all the residents had managed to escape, the fire chief said. It was "an outside fire against the side of the buildings," Kelleher said, and even though the flames did not spread into the homes, there was "a good volume of fire," he said. A bedroom fire on Bonair Street could have spread had it not been for the quick actions taken by a new member of the Somerville Fire Department.
A Thursday afternoon fire on Bonair Street could have been a lot worse had it not been for off-duty firefighter Eric Saulnier. Saulnier, who "just got out of the Academy," was working nearby when he saw smoke coming from 62 Bonair St., according to Firefighter Thomas Ross, president of Firefighters Local 76. Deputy Fire Chief Charles Breen said in an email that Soulnier and a co-worker, Steve Conway, were working on a nearby roof on Otis Street when they saw the fire. The fire was in a first-floor bedroom, and Saulnier alerted the second-floor residents to evacuate the building, according to Breen. Ross said Saulnier then closed the doors to the bedroom. After three fires started by burning candles, the Somerville Fire Department urges residents to be careful with candles.
A Monday morning fire at 130 Sycamore St. that sent one woman to the hospital and left at least six people temporarily homeless was started by a candle, the Somerville Fire Department said in an email sent Wednesday morning. Fire officials originally thought the Sycamore Street fire was started when a resident fell asleep while smoking, but they now say it was caused by a candle left burning, the email says. Two other recent fires are also blamed on candles, according to the fire department. On Sept. 25, a fire at 167 Pearl St. gutted the first floor of the three-story home, sent one resident to the hospital and displaced seven people and a cat. The accident happened at around 10:35 p.m. at McGrath Highway and Mystic Avenue. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
A Thursday-night car crash involving three vehicles sent seven people to the hospital, none of them with serious injuries, according to the Somerville Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police. The accident happened at around 10:35 p.m. at the intersection of Route 28 southbound (McGrath Highway) and Mystic Avenue, according to Trooper Todd Nolan of the Massachusetts State Police. A 19-year-old man from Revere, who was driving a 1994 Acura, was cited as being responsible for the accident, and he was sent to Somerville Hospital, Nolan said. Carlos Barbosa, 47, is doing "perfectly fine," according to an official at Universal Wilde, his employer, which is launching an investigation into the incident.
Carlos Barbosa, the 47-year-old man who was rescued from a silo packed tight with shredded paper on April 5, has a few "bumps and bruises" but is doing "perfectly fine," according to Steve Duffy, director of Human Resources at Universal Wilde, the company where Barbosa worked. Universal Wilde is a marketing services company that does printing and direct mail projects, among other things. Barbosa, a printing press operator at the company, had climbed up into the silo, which was filled with paper cuttings, to unclog a jam Thursday night when he got trapped, Duffy said. Seven-person family will stay in hotel for the night, according to American Red Cross.
Update, 9:40 a.m.: The American Red Cross is at the scene on Glen Street. Seven family members are homeless after the Friday morning attic fire. "We were informed by the Somerville Fire Department that seven people were displaced and are going to need assistance," said American Red Cross Communications Director Kat Powers. The Red Cross will provide hotel accommodations for the evening and emergency finances for food, said Powers. More assistance for clothing and other necessities may be given if needed.
