Matthew McLaughlin Jumps into Ward 1 Alderman Race

The Somerville native, Save Our Somerville founder and Iraq War veteran turns the Ward 1 race into a three-way contest.

Residents may know Matt McLaughlin as one of the founders of Save Our Somerville, a local organization "committed to giving a voice to those who feel they have no voice in our community." McLaughlin, 32, is now a candidate for alderman in Ward 1. The Somerville native is joining a race that also includes sitting Ward 1 Alderman Maureen Bastardi and East Somerville businessman Elio LoRusso. McLaughlin sees his candidacy as a continuation of the work he's done with Save Our Somerville. When former Ward 1 Alderman William Roche resigned in December of 2012—Bastardi was appointed as his replacement—McLaughlin saw it as "a big opportunity" to further his work. Maureen Bastardi Announces Run for Alderman in Ward 1

Here's the official announcement from Bastardi.

On March 13, 2013, we posted news that Ward 1 Alderman Maureen Bastardi, who had been appointed to the position, was running for the office in this fall's elections. Bastardi: 'I Am Running' in Ward 1

The Ward 1 alderman will not run unopposed as she seeks election this fall.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Maureen Bastardi, who was appointed to the Somerville Board of Aldermen in December, 2012, said she is running for her seat in Ward 1 this fall. "I am running," Bastardi told Somerville Patch Tuesday. Bastardi was appointed to complete the term of former Ward 1 Alderman William Roche, who stepped down to spend more time with his family. Bastardi has previously held elected office in Ward 1, having served on the School Committee before her appointment to the Board of Aldermen. She will face at least one challenger this fall. Elio LoRusso Announces Run for Alderman in Ward 1

LoRusso owns Somerville Ornamental Iron Works and says "many exciting things are happening in East Somerville."

Elio LoRusso, an East Somerville native who owns Somerville Ornamental Iron Works, said he is running for alderman in Ward 1. In an announcement sent Monday, LoRusso unveiled his campaign website, eliolorusso.com. The website says, "Elio is running to be your alderman, because our neighborhoods and our city are at a crossroads. Many exciting things are happening in East Somerville—from the Assembly Square development to the re-vamping of East Broadway—and Elio believes he has the relationships and experience to deliver solid leadership to Ward 1 during these pivotal times." Katjana Ballantyne Announces Run for Ward 7 Alderman Seat

Ballantyne ran unsuccessfully in 2011 for a seat on the Somerville Board of Aldermen but came close to defeating incumbent Ward 7 Alderman Robert Trane.

With a city election taking place this fall, local candidates are beginning to throw their hats into the ring. On Monday, Katjana Ballantyne announced she would run again for alderman in Somerville's Ward 7 (West Somerville). Ballantyne ran for the seat in 2011 but was narrowly defeated by incumbent Ward 7 Alderman Robert Trane. Trane's margin of victory was 40 votes. In her announcement, Ballantyne made a reference to 2011's tight race. The announcement says, "As a first time candidate in the 2011 elections, Ballantyne won two of the three precincts in Ward 7 and came 40 votes short of defeating the longtime, incumbent alderman."
