How Many Cars Were Towed in Somerville Last Night?

The numbers were a little on the high side, but not abnormally high, according to a city spokesperson.

About 200 of you may have woken up this morning to find six or seven inches of snow on the ground and that your car had been towed. That—200—is about how many cars were towed Monday night and early Tuesday morning due to the snow emergency in Somerville, according to Jackie Rossetti, a spokesperson for the city of Somerville. That number "might be slightly higher" than with most snow emergencies, but it's not "abnormal," Rossetti said. She said most snow emergencies lead to the city towing between 100 and 200 cars. "Our hope is not to tow that many," she said. When Somerville declares a snow emergency, as it did Monday night, residents have four hours to move their cars from even-numbered sides of the street to odd-numbered sides or into …

That's a good question, Elizabeth Rose, particularly given the weather and the slippery road conditions. However, given the rather disgusting track record of Pat's Towing, it's not surprising that they were driving around like lunatics trying to get as many cars towed as possible, and yet the streets have to be plowed in order to be passable. It's a double-edged sword here.   more ›

Somerville Snow Emergency Likely This Weekend

The area could get 4 to 8 inches of snow, possibly stretching snow removal budgets, and people's patience, thin.

Video and Photos: Removing Snow in Somerville

Trucks haul snow, and mounds pile up in parts of the city.

On Monday and Tuesday, police closed off sections of main roads and squares in Somerville so crews could remove snow. In this video, a wheel loader dumps snow into a truck, one of a handful lined up on Powder House Boulevard to haul away snow. Many of the trucks took their loads to Assembly Square and dumped them on the parcel of land once slated to be an IKEA furnitre warehouse. Here are also some photos of snow mounds in Somerville. Warm Weather, Melting Encouraged City to Open Schools, End Snow Emergency

"We're working around the clock. Literally around the clock," said a city spokesperson about snow removal efforts.

After deciding Monday to keep Somerville's public schools closed until at least Thursday—to allow workers to clear snow after a weekend blizzard—the city reversed course Tuesday afternoon and declared schools would be open Wednesday. The city also lifted its snow emergency and parking ban, effective Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Tuesday's news came after a short series of decisions and reversals about the parking ban and school cancelations. It's obvious nobody had spent time developing an effective plan for this kind of storm, which is scary. It's not THAT unusual, and conditions were favorable for clean-up. Management needs to get a spanking...they're good at doing that if residents don't comply with their mandates.   more ›

Snow Emergency Ends at 8 P.M., Schools Open Wednesday

Somerville's snow emergency will end Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. and schools will be open on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Residents have until 10 p.m. to move their cars from municipal lots.

Somerville is finally getting back to normal after the Blizzard of '13. The snow emergency will be lifted as of 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the city announced in an email, and Somerville Public Schools will be in session on Wednesday, Feb. 13. If you parked your car in a municipal lot due to the snow emergency, you have until 10 p.m. on Tuesday night to move your car so plows can clear snow from the lots. The city also reminds residents that  while parking on the even side of the street will be allowed after the parking ban is lifted, the law requires at least 10 feet of passage for emergency vehicles. So take care on those side roads that might still be narrow due to snow banks on either side—you could get a ticket or towed without that 10 feet of…

They certainly did an awful job.........couldn't get out of my street Sunday morning; they had it blocked with snow from plowing - at least 3 ft. high - I would have thought they would have had the sense to use the large trucks instead of the small pickups with plows on them - isn't that why we have to park on one side of the street, so they can plow?????   more ›
