Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy. Somerville Local First Launches 'Local is for Lovers' Market

The market will highlight local merchants for the holiday shopping season.

Somerville Local First, on organization that promotes local businesses, is hosting its first ever holiday market this year. Called "Local is for Lovers," the market will let people shop locally all in one place. The market takes place Dec. 2 at The Center for Arts at the Armory, and it will include items from local merchants and artists, along with kid-friendly music and activities. Kat Rutkin, executive director of Somerville Local First, said one fun part of the market will be a table filled with Somerville restaurants selling gift certificates. SPEAK OUT: Do You Plan to Spend More Money this Holiday Season?

How will your finances affect your holiday spending?

  Two-thirds, 67 percent, of respondents to a recent poll by the NPD Group said they “plan to spend about the same” as last year, while 10 percent planned to “spend more.” That's a slight increase in consumer optimisim compared to 2011, when 64 percent of consumers said they would spend about the same and 9 percent said they would spend more. This year, 23 percent of consumers said they "plan to spend less," compared to 27 percent who responded that way in 2011. With the economy and job situation still in flux for many families, we want to know what families in the Somerville area plan to do for Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanzaa gifts in 2012. About the same this year which is very little. Not in this economy. My pay has down in the last 3 years. My father (almost 90) will be making some toys for toys for tots with my mother's help, they go over big there. They don't have the resources for much more than that.   more ›
