City Staffers Rock Bodacious Outfits in Fitness Challenge Video

The Mayor's Fitness Challenge kicks off Saturday, and a promotional video features city staffers … well, maybe you should see for yourself.

The Mayor's Fitness Challenge, in which teams and individuals compete to lose weight and improve their health, begins Saturday and runs through June 20. The kickoff event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Somerville High School gym, with music, fitness demonstrations, family activities, a health and fitness fair and the opportunity to join the challenge. On Friday the Fitness Challenge Facebook page revealed a promotional video featuring a number of city staffers getting some exercise. In the video, several of them are wearing period workout outfits, although it's hard to tell exactly what period we're talking about. Road Race For Kids and Adults on April 7

The fourth annual Shape Up Somerville road race begins at 10:30 a.m. outside the high school.

The fourth annual Shape Up Somerville road race is scheduled to take place April 7, according to an announcement from the city. The race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a 1-mile children's fun run. A 2.7 mile walk also begins at that time, and an adult recreational road race starts at 11 a.m., the announcement says. The race begins and ends at the Somerville High School Concourse, and the price—$5 for kids and $20 for adults—gets participants a T-shirt, refreshments, activities and music. Top male and female finishers will receive awards.  Afterward there will be a post-race celebration at Casey's on East Broadway, the announcement says. Yay.....another road race. Another Sunday morning unable to get out of home, to church, the grocery store, etc. And once again involving both Broadway and Highland Ave., so you can't cross the city either way. Maybe my church could hold services on Saturday for the next 6 months.   more ›

'Shape Up Somerville' Campaign Wins Recognition from Michelle Obama

Somerville was one of 12 communities from across the nation to be recognized at a ceremony held in Boston.

The "Shape Up Somerville" campaign received recognition from First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative and the National League of Cities. According to announcements from the city of Somerville and the National League of Cities, "Shape Up Somerville," a program designed to diminish childhood obesity and improve the health of residents, received five medals from the National League of Cities for meeting goals laid out by "Let's Move." Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone received the recognition Thursday at a ceremony held in Boston. With 118 communities across the country participating in the "Let's Move, Cities, Towns and Counties" program, Somerville was one of 12 that received the highest standings in the medal count, according to…

Shape Up Somerville Featured on WBUR’s ‘Here and Now’

The radio program took a look at Somerville’s efforts to increase physical activity and improve nutrition among its residents.

WBUR’s “Here and Now” radio program took a look Monday at Somerville's efforts to cut down on obesity and live healthier lifestyles. The show’s host, Robin Young, pointed to the overall transformation that has occurred in Somerville over the past few decades, and said, “Somerville residents are trying to get healthier.” The radio segment focused on the city’s Shape Up Somerville program, which encourages residents to be more active and eat healthier foods. Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone was Young’s guest. He said that when he became mayor in 2004, Tufts University showed him data that 40 percent of Somerville’s kids were obese or at risk of becoming obese.
