Shooting Suspect Was Defending Home From Possible Gang Members, Says Lawyer

The alleged shooter's lawyer says the defendant and his family had been threatened by tenants who shared their Broadway home.

Santano Dessin, the Somerville man accused of shooting a 28-year-old in the neck Sunday night, was defending his family's home from tenants with possible gang affiliations, according to Dessin's lawyer, who spoke Tuesday morning at Dessin's arraignment. Dessin, 33, has been charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. The shooting took place at around 11:30 p.m. after Dessin got into a verbal argument with the victim, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office. Somerville Man to Be Arraigned in Connection to Sunday Night Shooting

A 28-year-old victim was shot in the neck, according to the district attorney.

A Somerville man was scheduled to be arraigned in Somerville District Court Tuesday morning and charged with the Sunday night shooting in East Somerville of a 28-year-old victim. Somerville Police Sunday night arrested 33-year-old Santano Dessin, of 196 Broadway, in connection to the shooting, which occured at the same address, according to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office and a Somerville Police booking log. According to the district attorney's office, Dessin is accused of shooting the victim in the neck after the two got into a verbal argument. The victim just happens to be a friend of mine. Also he causes no trouble at all. NEVER. He is very quiet. It just so happens that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. And now he's practically dead. He was shot in the neck about 3 times. He was left in critical condition. Now he can't speak.   more ›
