Researchers will release a non-dangerous bacterium into the stations to test a sensor network designed to alert authorities of biological attack.
This spring, the Department of Homeland Security will simulate a biological attack at Davis, Porter and Harvard stations, according to an environmental assessment of the project, media reports and the city of Somerville. As part of the simulation, researchers will conduct an aerosol release of a bacterium not considered dangerous to humans, according to the environmental assessment. The purpose of the simulation is to test a network of sensors in the train system designed to detect biological agents and alert authorities of possible biological attacks. Authorities are holding a public hearing about the test on May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Central Square YMCA in Cambridge so the public can learn about the experiment. According to an …

The Red Line was shut down between Harvard and JFK/UMass Wednesday morning, according to press reports.
Red Line riders faced a nasty commute into Boston Wednesday morning when a fire shut down the subway service for about an hour, according to press reports. According to Boston.com, the fire started in the tunnel near Downtown Crossing and the MBTA shut down service between Harvard and JFK/UMass stations, replacing trains with bus service. The shutdown lasted from about 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Boston.com reports. The Boston Herald reported "smoldering cables" on the ground and walls of Downtown Crossing station, and the MBTA had to shut down service to allow firefighters to put them out. Sounds like a nightmare commute. Anyone got stories?

For the first time since October, weekend riders will be able to use the Red Line in Somerville.
After four months of weekend closures, Red Line service between Harvard and Alewife stations will resume this Saturday. The Red Line has been shut down on weekends since Nov. 5, 2011, so the MBTA could conduct repairs to the tunnel. The transit authority fixed water leaks, replaced 6000 feet of track and 2300 feet of the third rail, and it also installed new concrete slabs that support the track. During the past four months, riders took a replacement bus service between Alewife and Harvard. Modest crowds often gathered at the Davis Square T stop to wait for the bus. According to an email from Joe Pesaturo, a spokesperson for the MBTA, the project was completed on schedule and on budget. He said this year's mild winter helped work crews …

The MBTA has agreed to offer "significant" advertising discounts to Somerville businesses as mitigation for weekend Red Line closures, according to The Tufts Daily.
The MBTA will offer an advertising discount to Somerville businesses as mitigation for weekend closures of the Red Line, The Tufts Daily is reporting. The Red Line has been shut down between Harvard Station and Alewife Station on weekends since November, and the weekend closures will continue until early March so the MBTA can make needed repairs. Some fear the weekend closures could impact businesses in Davis Square, where Somerville's only MBTA rail stop is located. Shuttle bus service has replaced trains during weekends. Members of the Somerville Board of Aldermen floated the idea of asking the MBTA for an advertising discount in November, passing a resoluton on the matter. The weekend shutdowns will "inevitably hinder the businesses in …

Seeking mitigation for weekend Red Line closures, the Somerville Board of Aldermen will ask the MBTA to help promote shopping in Davis Square.
Saying weekend closures on the Red Line, which started this month and continue into March, "will inevitably hinder the businesses in Davis Square," Alderman At-Large Bruce Desmond wants the MBTA to help promote the Somerville commercial district with an ad campaign. The Board of Aldermen agreed, passing a resolution Tuesday night that asks the MBTA to meet with Somerville's mayor and the Somerville Chamber of Commerce to discuss the matter. Essentially, the aldermen hope the MBTA will offer an advertising discount to the Chamber of Commerce so the group can run a "shop in Somerville" ad campaign on trains and buses. The MBTA has instituted weekend shutdowns of Red Line train service between Harvard and Alewife stations in order to …

The Somerville Beacon Hill representatives, and Rep. Sean Garballey of Arlington, discuss maintenance on the Red Line that is shutting down weekend service in Somerville until March.
The following is a letter from Somerville State Sen. Pat Jehlen, Somerville State Rep. Carl Sciortino, and State Rep. Sean Garballey of Arlington: On November 5, the MBTA started a maintenance project to address one of the most safety-critical areas: the floating concrete slabs in the Red Line tunnel between Alewife and Harvard stations. While this project is vital to prevent train derailments and reduce breakdowns, it unfortunately will have a major impact on everyone that relies on weekend Red Line service during the winter. The Red Line service between Alewife and Harvard will be shut down each weekend, except for the weekends of Christmas and New Years, from now until March 4, 2012. Shuttle bus service will replace train service …

Weekend service on the Red Line between Harvard and Alewife will be shut down from Nov. 5 to March 4. It's just the beginning of ongoing repair work that will last until 2016.
If you enjoy hopping on the Red Line on Saturdays or Sundays for a straight-shot train ride into Boston, this is your last weekend to do so for several months. Beginning Nov. 5, and lasting until March 4, Red Line trains will be out of commission on weekends between Harvard and Alewife stations as the MBTA conducts work on the tunnel and tracks. The Red Line will operate on a normal schedule Mondays through Fridays throughout that period. In place of trains, the MBTA will operate buses between Harvard and Alewife stations during weekends. The four months of weekend shutdowns will affect thousands of people. On a typical Saturday, there are about 21,285 fare gate entries at Davis, Porter and Alewife stations, according to Joe Pesaturo, a …
