Welcome back Todd English and crew! Two vegetarians, one vegan and one " I eat everything" diner and we all left the reopened and revamped Olives in City Square completely excited by chef Todd English's tasting menu (due to the "soft opening") selections, the service, the "bistro" decor and the pure ENERGY emanating from every corner. This is clearly a restaurant for those looking to "dine", have…   more ›

Where's the Best Place for a 'Staycation' in Somerville?

If you had the opportunity to take vacation right here in Somerville, where would you go?

Vacations can be tiring. They often involve early morning travel, tedious planning, long hours in a car with bickering kids, heavy meals and non-stop exposure to friends and family who, as much as you love them, can get on your nerves. That's why people sometimes take mini vacations and stay at home—the so-called "staycation." During staycations you want to take it easy and slow down. You want to be lazy. If you were to take a staycation in Somerville, or if you've actually done so, where would you go? That's the subject of this week's question. We thought about places where people could relax, get away from the day-to-day grind and bring the kids. Take a look at the options below and then vote in our poll and leave comments and reviews. …

Nominate Somerville Staycation Destinations

When you need to get away while staying home, in Somerville, where do you go?

Next week, we ask, "Where's the best place in Somerville for a staycation?" We're thinking of places where you can get away from the daily grind, relax, spend some quiet time and, maybe, take the kids. As you can imagine, there are a lot of options, and we're trying to narrow them down. If you think there's a great spot in Somerville for a staycation, send an email to chris.orchard@patch.com, and we'll update the list, which is already being developed, as soon as possible.

I second Ken Long's comment. It's also novel to most Somerville residents. I recently started rowing classes at the Blessing of the Bay boathouse, and I was surprised by how beautiful it was, hidden behind roaring I-93.   more ›

Winner: Best Spot for Mother's Day Brunch

Highland Kitchen wins again.

When it comes to taking Mom out for brunch on Mother's Day, most Somerville Patch readers would take her to Highland Kitchen. In doing so, they're taking advantage of two things: Mother's Day is on a Sunday, and Highland Kitchen, which usually opens at 5 p.m., is open for brunch on Sundays. This is Highland Kitchen's second win. Previously, Patch readers said it was the best place in Somerville to get dinner. J.J., a reviewer on Somerville Patch, had this to say about Highland Kitchen: "Best burger in Somerville—if not Boston. And the mark and stormy is good (and strong) enough to make you forget that you've been waiting 40 minutes for a seat. Worth the wait and the hype." Perhaps that's not about brunch, but you get the point. Some …

Nominate Mother's Day Brunch Spots in Somerville

We're trying to find the best spot in Somerville for Mother's Day brunch. If you have a favorite place, let us know.

On Monday we ask an important question: Where's the best place in Somerville to have Mother's Day brunch. Now, before any of you respond with, "whatever's cheapest and has the fastest table service," remember this: She's your mother; show a little gratitude. Choosing a Mother's Day brunch location can be difficult, and coming up with a list of such places is also difficult. If you have a favorite spot in Somerville, nominate it by sending an email to chris.orchard@patch.com. Voting begins on Monday morning, and we also encourage you to leave reviews and write comments.

Winner: Best Florist in Somerville

Nellie's Wildflowers in Davis Square is the winner.

The best florist in Somerville is Nellie's Wildflowers outside Davis Square, according to Somerville Patch users. We tallied votes, comments and reviews to determine the winner. Nellie's isn't your typical florist. As the name "wildflowers" indicates, they branch out from the standard collection of roses and carnations to create unique bouquets composed of flowers you can't find everywhere. "Every bouquet we make is an original," said Jessica Squires, an employee. She was happy for the win and said, "We're all a tight-knit family."  Patch readers had good things to say about Nellie's. "Great flowers all the time," Kevin wrote. "Have ordered several times through the years. Keep up the good work." "Nellie's is the best," wrote Julie Anne …
