Over 14,000 NSTAR customers in Cambridge lost power Thursday evening, plunging whole neighborhoods into darkness and causing a commuting headache.
Somerville residents faced a nasty commute Thursday evening when a significant power outage in Cambridge led to major delays on the Red Line and gridlock on Cambridge streets. Many Somerville residents work, study and shop in neighboring Cambridge, and those who work in Boston travel through that city on their way home. The outage affected over 14,000 NSTAR customers in Cambridge, about 30 percent of the city, according to the electric company's power outage map, though according to Boston.com as many as 17,000 customers (34 percent) were without power at one point. Board members urged residents, NSTAR customers and business owners to attend a Feb. 29 public meeting with the power company.
The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Thursday night to investigate repeated power outages in Magoun Square and press NSTAR—potentially with the help of the state—to resolve that problem and others. Members of the board’s Committee on Public Utilities and Works will meet Feb. 29 with the electric company to discuss “a whole host of issues,” said Ward 5 Alderman Sean O’Donovan. They will address the continued outages near 470 Medford St., low-hanging wires and ongoing repairs in West Somerville, according to the agenda. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory in effect from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. tonight.
An intensifying storm system passing over western New England tonight is expected to bring strong and possibly damaging winds to the Somerville area, and the wind could lead to downed tree limbs and isolated power outages, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned this morning. The NWS has issued a wind advisory in effect from 9 p.m. tonight through 3 a.m. tomorrow morning, stating that the strong southerly winds will have the strongest gusts along the Rhode Island coast, Cape Cod and the islands, although Somerville and the rest of southeast Middlesex County are included in the advisory area.
