'Somerville by Design' Workshops to Discuss Ball, Magoun, Gilman Squares

The meetings, on Nov. 28 and 29, will take place at The Center for Arts at the Armory.

"Somerville by Design," an urban planning initiative, aims to create visions for the futures of Magoun, Gilman and Ball squares  and plan for the Green Line. It also seeks to inform city planners in an effort to overhaul residential zoning laws. There was an initial "visioning session" on Oct. 17. Now, the city has a series of other meetings set up to seek thoughts and opinions from the public. Readers' Ideas About Davis Square Streetscape Improvements Vary Widely

What some commenters said about planned changes to Davis Square's streets and sidewalks.

Based on readers' comments, there's little agreement about how—or even if—to improved Davis Square's streets, sidewalks and public spaces. The city held a series of meetings over the summer about streetscape improvements to the square, and some of the recommendations include altering the shape of roads and sidewalks, improving traffic-light signals and using materials other than brick for sidewalks. While some commenters welcomed changes to Davis Square, others feared change could make life worse for drivers and pedestrians.
