David Tagliaferro, for six years a familiar and friendly face to Davis Square Red Line commuters, died on Saturday, and this week there's been an outpouring of condolences from the straphangers he interacted with every work day. Tagliaferro was a promoter for the Metro Boston newspaper, and every Monday through Friday he handed out the free daily publication to T riders at Davis Square Station. "He was quite well liked in the area" and he "lit up commuters' lives every morning," said Walt Zorkers, distribution manager at Metro Boston. "He touched a lot of lives positively," Zorkers said. The Digboston box stood out from its neighbors. Now it's gone, says the weekly newspaper.
Among the collection of newspaper boxes outside Blue Shirt Cafe in Davis Square, one stood out. It had little outstretched arms welded to its side and it was painted with sharp teeth and crazy eyes. Called, "Rawr: The Awkward Godzilla," it was designed by Artisan's Asylum artist Cat Tweedie Ball, according to Digboston, which distributed its weekly alternative newspaper using the box. It was one of several specially designed Digboston boxes in Somerville. Now, according to the newspaper, the box is missing and possibly stolen. Read Digboston's account of what happened here.
