The Somerville congressman has indicated he's not happy with the political culture in Washington.
Rep. Michael Capuano, formerly mayor of Somerville, is getting closer to making a decision about whether or not to run for governor in 2014, according to the State House News Service. "The clock is running, so I’m closer," Capuano told reporters Monday, according to the news service. The State House News Service said the congressman has been frustrated with gridlock in the House of Representatives. "We’ve been doing almost nothing but pontificating and posturing for almost this entire year," he said. In February, Capuano told WBUR, "Part of me thinks that some of the more interesting, more important fights over the next several years might be conducted at statehouses around the country and not necessarily on Capitol Hill." He said at the …

Shortly before 7 p.m., Capuano spoke to a crowded House floor before the legislative body marked the moment of silence. His comments were broadcast on WHDH. Here's what he said: "It was a terrible tragedy, and no matter how you measure it, I don't know if it was official terrorism or unofficial terrorism or whatever, but clearly anyone to act in such a manner is clearly an evil person and deserves to be called as such. I know that today the rest of America stands with us as we have stood with …

The Somerville congressman told WBUR he'll take several months to make a decision.
Rep. Michael Capuano is giving some thought to running for governor in 2014. The Somerville congressman told WBUR he's considering a run and that he will take months to make a final decision. Capuano told the radio station, "Part of me thinks that some of the more interesting, more important fights over the next several years might be conducted at statehouses around the country and not necessarily on Capitol Hill." He also told WBUR he thinks the Tea Party will continue to have "Capitol Hill under siege" in the near future. Capuano's decision may further speculation about the political future of Somerville's mayor, Joseph Curtatone, who some have pegged as a possible gubernatorial candidate himself. Others have suggested Curtatone might be…

According to Capuano's Facebook page, the congressman withdrew his name from the field of possible candidates. Here's what he posted: Thank you for all of your good wishes. They have truly meant a great deal. After careful consideration, I have decided not to enter the race for US Senate. Instead, I look forward to focusing on the important issues facing the new Congress. The congressman thinks both sides will reach a compromise at some point, but not before the end of the year. He noted "the world does not end January 1st."
In regard to the so-called fiscal cliff, Rep. Michael Capuano does not think Democrats and Republicans will reach a "grand bargain" before January 1st. Speaking in Somerville after a groundbreaking ceremony for veterans housing, Capuano said, "We have to do something in the next couple of weeks," but added Congress will likely be dealing with the matter for a long time. "I think we'll be doing this for the foreseeable future," he said. "People have got to understand we'll reach a compromise at some point, but this is going to impact peoples daily lives," he said. The congressman agreed with some who think the term "fiscal cliff" might not be accurate. "I think it's the wrong imagery. The world does not end January 1st. It is a slope, and …

The Somerville congressman told WCVB he wasn't sure if Sen. Scott Brown would run, or win, if Sen. John Kerry leaves the Senate to accept a cabinet position.
Rep. Michael Capuano told WCVB he would "consider" running for Senate if Sen. John Kerry leaves the legislative body to join President Barack Obama's cabinet. That said, Capuano told the TV station, "I can't deal the cards," and that he wasn't officially "planning anything." If Kerry, who was first elected to the Senate in 1984, joined Obama's cabinet, it could lead a number of prospective candidates to consider running for his seat. Among those possible candidates would be Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who recently lost a bid for reelection to Elizabeth Warren. In regard to Brown, Capuano, a Democrat, told WCVB he wasn't sure if the Republican would run again, or win. Capuano ran for Senate once before during the 2010 special election to …

The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would be the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. Conversation from the breakfast table this morning to the morning commute has everyone talking - who will run for Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if he's appointed? Could it be Scott Brown? Or maybe Congressmen Ed Markey or Michael Capuano? Only time will tell, but we know you're talking about it. So tell us, who do you think will …
