Somerville's Liquor License Home Rule Petition Cut Down by State

Somerville will likely get 10 new liquor licenses, plus 2 more designated for Assembly Square, but the state legislature decided to maintain a cap on the city's licenses.

Somerville asked the state legislature, which imposes caps the number of liquor licenses each city and town can issue, to do away with the cap in Somerville. The state legislature said no. That's according to proceedings from a Somerville Board of Aldermen meeting held Thursday night. Instead of granting the city unlimited liquor licenses, the legislature asked Somerville to come back with an amended request, known as a home rule petition. Somerville's new home rule petition formally asks the legislature to allow 10 new citywide liquor licenses. The Somerville Board of Aldermen approved the new home rule petition Thursday, but members weren't happy about it. Neither was the mayor, Joseph Curtatone. "It's very frustrating, I have to tell …

I don't agree that a beer and wine license that allows restaurants to serve to customers with their food at a table should be included in the overall count of liquor licenses . Beer and wine don't come close to the amount of alcohol content that is in hard 60 - 100 % liquor. Restaurants do not have bars solely for drinking purposes. This ruling the state has is archaic and should be challenged by…   more ›

Woody's Liquors Busted By State Alcohol Commission

The Magoun Square liquor store could be closed from Sept. 5 through Sept. 19 as a result.

Woody's Liquors outside Magoun Square was busted for selling a six-pack of Vermont microbrew and a handle of gin to an underage customer, according to the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. As a result, the liquor store will have its license suspended for 15 days in September—or pay a fine—according to the commission. In a notice of suspension dated July 18, the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission outlines some details of an investigation into the business, at 523 Broadway, conducted in early March. According to the document, investigators were outside Woody's on March 1 when they saw a young man walk out with a six-pack of Long Trail Hibernator beer (an unfiltered Scottish ale) and a 1.75-liter bottle of Barton Gin (…

Sluggish Progress on Somerville's Liquor License Home Rule Petition

State Rep. Denise Provost indicated the city's quest to issue more liquor licenses to restaurants has faced some challenges on Beacon Hill.

Somerville's effort to get permission from the state to grant more liquor licenses has faced some challenges on Beacon Hill, according to Somerville State Rep. Denise Provost, who spoke briefly to Somerville Patch about the subject on June 1. "It's been the subject of ongoing discussions in committee," Provost said about a bill that would increase the amount of liquor licenses Somerville is able to grant to restaurants. In Massachusetts, the state limits the number of liquor licenses each community is allowed to issue to restaurants and bars. As it now stands, Somerville is limited to 84 liquor licenses and 16 beer and wine licenses, and of those, 10 have been set aside for restaurants in the new Assembly Row development in Assembly Square…

If the state creates an artificial shortage of liquor-serving restaurants by imposing a limit on liquor licenses, restaurant food at the restaurants that have spent the big bucks it takes to acquire a liquor license will of course be more expensive than it would be otherwise.   more ›

Khoury's State Spa Space Is Going Upscale; New Restaurant Coming

A new East Somerville restaurant will feature classic American food with a Southern twist.

A restaurant called East End Grill will move into the Lower Broadway space once occupied by Khoury's State Spa, a bar that closed in 2009. Owners of East End Grill attended a Somerville Licensing Commission meeting Monday night to secure a liquor license for the new restaurant. Mike Cotter, a manager at Orleans in Davis Square, will be a general manager and co-owner of the new restaurant along with Mike Bandar, the two said after their appearance before the commission. Stephen Bandar will also be an owner, they said. The team has plans to completely renovate the front of the building, at 118-120 Broadway, currently a dark, uninviting, almost windowless facade of the sort favored by bars built decades ago. Cotter and Bandar said they have …

T.W. Food Owners Opening Restaurant in Union Square's Ronnarong Space

Tim and Bronwyn Wiechmann, from T.W. Food in Cambridge, are planning to open a restaurant, featuring new American cuisine and local ingredients, sometime in the fall.

The duo behind T.W. Food, a highly rated restaurant in Cambridge's Huron Village, are planning to open a new eatery in the space currently occupied by Ronnarong Thai Tapas in Union Square. Tim and Bronwyn Wiechmann appeared before the Somerville Licensing Commission Monday night to secure a liquor license for the new restaurant. The commission approved the transfer of the liquor license from Cafe Belo, which is facing bankruptcy, according to proceedings at the commission meeting.  Speaking after their appearance at the meeting, Tim Wiechmann said the new restaurant will feature New American cuisine with a "European cultural influence." The Wiechmanns' current restaurant, T.W. Food, was named one of the five best French restaurants in the …

"Tim Weichmann said they're choosing to open in Union Square because "it's inviting" and it has "independent businesses" and "it's creative."" This is not without irony. "They said they're hoping to open in September or October, but noted the process of opening a restaurant often takes longer than planned." Yes, I imagine so.   more ›
