Somerville Kids Visit White House: Some Media Coverage

Check out some interviews with the Somerville kids who went and some remarks made by first lady Michelle Obama during Thursday's White House gardening trip.

On Thursday five Somerville fifth-graders from the Healey School visited the White House to help first lady Michelle Obama plant the White House Kitchen Garden. One of those students, Sarah Sweeting, told WBZ the experience was "unforgettable," adding, "I've never met anyone that famous." Brian Chan told the TV station, "I'm going to remember this moment for all my life." "It feels like I'm dreaming; I don't feel like I'm really here," he told another TV station, WHDH. Mrs. Obama, speaking to WBZ, talked about Somerville's work to encourage healthy food and lifestyles among its young people, an effort the first lady promotes with her "Let's Move!" campaign. 'Shape Up Somerville' Campaign Wins Recognition from Michelle Obama

Somerville was one of 12 communities from across the nation to be recognized at a ceremony held in Boston.

The "Shape Up Somerville" campaign received recognition from First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative and the National League of Cities. According to announcements from the city of Somerville and the National League of Cities, "Shape Up Somerville," a program designed to diminish childhood obesity and improve the health of residents, received five medals from the National League of Cities for meeting goals laid out by "Let's Move." Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone received the recognition Thursday at a ceremony held in Boston. With 118 communities across the country participating in the "Let's Move, Cities, Towns and Counties" program, Somerville was one of 12 that received the highest standings in the medal count, according to…

More Salad Bars Come to Somerville Schools

Somerville public schools will have a total of three salad bars this school year, with possibly more to come.

After learning that the district wouldn’t receive an anticipated grant for a salad bar at the Argenziano School, Food Service Director Jeanne Irwin decided to buy one anyway. And then she bought another for the high school. Both schools should unveil the salad bars during the second week of classes, said Irwin. Students in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades at the Argenziano School, and all students in the high school, will be able to use them, she said. The salad bars and their offerings will resemble the one at the Winter Hill Community School, which received its salad bar as a donation from the Lets's Move Salad Bars to Schools initiative.
