ADVISORY: Expect Massive Traffic on I-93 for Columbus Day Weekend

The state is warning that road work on Saturday and Sunday may cause backups as long as 20 miles on I-93.

If you're driving this Columbus Day weekend, avoid I-93 northbound in Boston. The state has issued a travel advisory that road work will narrow I-93 to one lane from the Tip O'Neil Tunnel to the Zakim Bridge, according to the Herald. Backups of 20 miles are expected for northbound travelers.  The closures are planned to start Friday at 10 p.m. and go until 10 a.m. Saturday. Another work session is scheduled for Saturday 10 p.m. to Sunday 10 a.m. For a complete description of the work and lane closures, see the state's advisory. Because of the nature of the work, rain could force postponement. For traffic updates before you get behind the wheel, see the Somerville Patch traffic page. Should the State Install High-Speed Tolls on I-93?

Asked about toll fairness during a Patch live chat, Governor Deval Patrick asked a reader whether he'd support high-speed tolls. Are these a good way to share the transportation funding pain, or another money grab?

Are high-speed tolls along Interstate 93 and other highways a smart way to help fund transportation in the state? Governor Deval Patrick mentioned such a system during a Patch live chat on Thursday. If you've gone up Interstate 95 into New Hampshire, you've seen high-speed tolling in action. The system is designed to read your EZ-Pass (nee Fast Lane) transponder while you breeze by at 65 miles per hour. There's no need to slow down or squeeze though a booth, as EZ-Pass users currently do on the Mass Pike, Tobin Bridge and harbor tunnels. The chat moved on to other topics, so no details about implementation were offered. What do you think? Would tolls along I-93 offer some fairness to riders in Boston, MetroWest and North Shore, who all pay…

PHOTOS and VIDEO: Flimsy Fence Separates Neighborhood from I-93

Living next to Interstate 93 in East Somerville's Nunnery Grounds neighborhood is noisy. Aldermen say it's also dangerous and wouldn't be tolerated in other communities.

Speaking at a Somerville Board of Aldermen meeting Nov. 22, Alderman At-Large Dennis Sullivan called it "a tragedy waiting to happen." "Plastic ties, Madame President, separating children from the highway!" he said, speaking to Board of Aldermen President Rebekah Gewirtz. Sullivan was talking about the flimsy and partially fallen down chain link fence that separates Interstate 93 from the Nunnery Grounds, an East Somerville neighborhood that borders the highway, north of Broadway. Sullivan said he can't think of any other town in the state that has a neighborhood so exposed to the highway. Most communities near highways have "big sound barriers" and "concrete walls," he said. "It would not be tolerated, I don't think, in any other …

I think that this situation is disgraceful and unacceptable. It shows very well, however, how ineffective our state reps and our city government is. This would not be tolerated in Woburn, Wilmington, Andover, or any of the other towns that 93 runs through. While the city is wasting our time and money on a lot of fluff, and no substance, this is what is happening to the people who live here. I …   more ›

Construction to Slow I-93, Close Webster St. and Mystic River Channel

This weekend's "Fast14" construction will be on the overpass above Webster Street. It is expected to cause delays in both directions on I-93 north of Boston.

Construction on I-93 this weekend will close one local road, narrow the highway to two lanes and close a channel of the Mystic River to boaters. Work continues this weekend on the on-going "Fast14" rapid bridge replacement project. From 7:45 p.m. Friday, July 29 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, I-93 will be narrowed to two lanes from Exit 28 in Somerville to Exit 36 in Stoneham. Access to and from many of the ramps on I-93 South in this area will be restricted. This week's work will replace structures that carry the highway south over Webster Street and the Mystic River. As result, Webster Street will be closed and the Mystic River channel near the highway will be closed to boaters. The on-ramps to I-93 South from Fellsway West at Exit 34, …
