Somerville Trucks Hurricane Sandy Donations to Somerville, New Jersey [Video]

A U-Haul filled with food and supplies is destined for a New Jersey community devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone planned to join Somerville police and other city staffers Friday in making the delivery.

A delegation from Somerville, including Mayor Joseph Curtatone and members of the Somerville Police Department, were scheduled to drive a U-Haul truck down to Somerville, N.J., Friday to bring donations to victims of Hurricane Sandy. Friday afternoon, members of the police department demonstrated their truck-packing capabilities in front of City Hall before heading south. The U-Haul truck was filled with food, cleaning supplies and other items that are destined, ultimately, for the community of Highlands, N.J., where most of the town's 1,500 homes and nearly all of its businesses were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, which battered the area in October, 2012. 12-12-12 Concert to Benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims

Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.

Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. The all-star lineup includes Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney, with other artists to be announced. Somerville, Mass., is teaming up with Somerville, N.J. and Summerville, S.C. to donate goods to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Three cities with the same name—Somerville, Mass., Somerville, N.J. and Summerville, S.C.—are teaming up to collect a variety of goods for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Summerville, S.C. sent its donations to New Jersey on Dec. 7, and Somerville, Mass., will send donations on Dec. 22. Somerville Teams Up With Somerville, N.J., Summerville, S.C. on Sandy Relief

Somerville is teaming up with two other communities with the same name—Somerville, N.J. and Summerville, S.C.—to collect supplies for people still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Jackie Rossetti, a spokesperson for the city of Somerville (our Somerville) said the joint effort is definitely taking place but the three communities are still working out the details. Summerville, S.C., has already held a supply drive and is planning to ship supplies to Somerville, N.J. the weekend of Dec. 8 and 9, accoring Rossetti and Summerville Patch. Somerville and Medford Football Fans to Support Sandy Victims at Friday's Game

Bring a non-perishable item to Friday's football game to help Hurricane Sandy victims in New York and New Jersey—and get $1 off admission to the game.

Somerville and Medford high schools are hoping to help out victims of Hurricane Sandy at Friday's football game at Dilboy Stadium. Superstorm Sandy Relief: How You Can Help

Here's how Boston-area donations can aid victims in the most severely damaged areas.

The Boston area was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. But not as hard as elsewhere. Residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not as lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources for those who want to help in relief efforts. New Jersey Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Somerville Cleans Up After Sandy, Schools Open Wednesday, Halloween Happening

OnTuesday afternoon the city was evaluating damage.

"We're as busy now as we were yesterday," said Thomas Champion, a spokesperson for the city of Somerville, speaking Tuesday afternoon about the community's efforts to clean up after Hurricane Sandy brought tropical-storm conditions to the area. Somerville public schools, closed Tuesday, were scheduled to be open Wednesday, the city announced. Trash pickups and parking restrictions were scheduled to proceed as normal on Wednesday, according to Champion. He said normal Halloween festivities and trick-or-treating would also take place on Wednesday. Although there was serious damage to parts of Somerville, including knocked down trees and wires, power outages and flooding, the city was relatively lucky in terms of escaping major damage, …

Sandy Batters Somerville, Things to Know on Tuesday

Most things are open Tuesday, but schools are closed.

Hurricane Sandy brought powerful tropical-storm conditions to Somerville Monday. It uprooted trees, knocked down limbs and utility lines, caused flooding and led to power outages in the city Monday afternoon and into the night. There were reports of residents being evacuated due to potential dangers from gas leaks and live wires. Somerville firefighters and police officers spent most of Monday responding to hazardous situations throughout the city, and as of Monday night they were still at it. Governor Says State Offices Will Reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday

Gov. Deval Patrick said Monday night that the MBTA will resume service on Tuesday and state offices will open at 10 a.m.

State offices will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Gov. Deval Patrick said in a Monday evening update on Hurricane Sandy from the bunker at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Framingham. On his Twitter account, Patrick said that all RMV Class D drivers' tests on Tuesday had been cancelled. Patrick also said non-essential state employees should show up for work at 10 a.m. and he is leaving it up to individual school districts to determine whether they will be open on Tuesday. On Sunday night, Patrick urged all school districts to close on Monday. The worst of the storm is expected to last through 11 p.m. and there is a high tide at about midnight.
