That's why it might be nice to live as close to school as possible—roll out of bed and into the classroom close. We looked at NewEnglandMoves.com to find five Somerville homes close to schools, and here they are: 31 Thurston St. Price: $369,900 Attributes: Condo with three bedrooms, one bathroom and 1126 square feet. Near: Winter Hill Community School 1 Fairlee St. Price: $599,00 Attributes: Multi-family home with four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and 2106 square feet. Near: John F. Kennedy Elementary School 18 Appleton St. Price: $789,000 Attributes: …

Somerville writer Marian Berkowitz interviewed the winners to create profiles of the historic Somerville properties and the people who care for them. In this article, Berkowitz looks not at a home, but at a church: Saint Ann's in Winter Hill, which recently underwent a renovation that included disguising the elevator equipment to blend in better with the building, restoring windows, adding a garden and conducting important work to the facade. Here's what Berkowitz wrote: On an overcast Sunday morning I am scheduled to interview Peter Regan, business …

Somerville writer Marian Berkowitz interviewed the winners to create profiles of the historic Somerville properties and the people who care for them. Today, Berkowitz writes about James and Dina Traniello, who live in a house with a turret at the top of Prospect Hill. The late 19th-century home has been in the Traniello family since 1946, and it was once home to a young woman who was murdered during her senior year at Smith College. Here's Berkowitz's story: Near the top of Prospect Hill is Boston Street where I meet James and Dina Traniello, who …

Somerville writer Marian Berkowitz interviewed the winners to create profiles of the historic Somerville properties and the people who care for them. Today, Berkowitz takes a look at the Colanninos, who bought their Davis Square house in 1969 when it was in rough shape and have turned it into a beautiful home without—and this is key—a chain-link fence. Home sales bounced back to 2010 numbers in the first half of 2012, according to The Warren Group.
Somerville Home sales were up considerably in the first half of 2012. According to figures from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman, 270 condos and single-family homes sold in Somerville during the first six months of the year. That's a 58.8 percent increase over the 170 condos and single-family homes that sold during the same period of 2011, according to the figures. June was a strong month, with 92 condos and single-family homes selling, compared to 61 in June of 2011. The first half of 2011 was particularly slow in Somerville, though home sales increased during the second half of that year. The numbers in 2012 more closely resemble those seen in 2010, when 273 condos and single-family homes sold in Somerville during the …
