"Ask This Old House," the PBS home improvement show, will air an episode in early January that features a home in Somerville, according to Somerville Beat. Somerville Beat says the New England home-building gurus shot a segment, called "repairing a cracked floor joist," a few months ago at a 100-year-old home near Magoun Square. On the year through July, Somerville saw a 50 percent increase in home sales compared to the same period in 2011.
Home sales in Somerville were up again in July, according to figures from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. A total of 81 single-family homes and condominiums sold in July, compared to the 63 that sold in July of 2011, according to the real estate information group. That's a 28 percent increase. On the year, home sales were also up in Somerville. A total of 351 single-family homes and condos sold through July. That compares to 233 through July in 2011—a 50 percent increase. It's important to note the figures do not reflect the number of two- and three-family homes in Somerville, which, together, represent about 51 percent of the housing stock in the city, according to numbers from a 2011 tax assessors report. The Boston Business Journal ranked the state's most in-demand urban housing markets, and Somerville neighborhoods made the grade.
Somerville's Ten Hills and Prospect Hill neighborhoods are among the most in-demand urban housing markets in Massachusetts, according to Boston Business Journal. The business publication looked at median home values, changes in home values and the percentage of homes selling for a loss to rank the strength of housing markets in urban neighborhoods. In doing so, it discovered "strong momentum" in neighborhoods that "have historically struggled with higher unemployment, crime and foreclosure rates." The Boston Business Journal said this is a "positive sign" that investors and "pioneering buyers" are willing to invest in many communities that were hit hard in the economic downturn.
