Andre Rolim runs fastest 600-meter of the season in Massachusetts and New England
Somerville junior Andre Rolim ran the fastest 600-meter run in both Massachusetts and New England Tuesday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. The run capped a four-medal performance by the Somerville Highlanders at the Boston Holiday Challenge, the first major track meet of their winter season. Though Rolim has often won the 600-meter by simply staying with the leaders for the first two laps, then exploding in the final 100 meters, this time he set a blistering pace almost immediately. “Usually I follow the rabbit, and in the end I pass him,” Rolim said. “But I just kept my pace [this time], and I finished.” Rolim pulled ahead of the pack just halfway through his first of three laps, widening the gap between himself …

Falcons still undefeated in Greater Boston League
The Cambridge Rindge & Latin Falcons overcame a five-point deficit in the first game of their girls’ volleyball match Wednesday against Somerville High and never looked back, sweeping the Highlanders in three games at the War Memorial Gym in Cambridge. After the Highlanders and Falcons split the first 12 points of their first game Wednesday, the Highlanders built the only sizable lead they would have all match. Falcons mistakes—including two serves into the net and two hits out of bounds—helped the Highlanders to a 7-1 run that pushed their lead all the way to 13-8. The Highlanders ended their boys basketball season by nearly turning around a 79-74 loss to Westford Academy in the first round of the state tourney.
Mark Cornelius had a career game, dropping 39 points to lead the Westford Academy Grey Ghosts to a 79-74 win over Somerville in the first round of the state tourney Tuesday night. The Grey Ghosts did not appear too bothered by their two-week layoff as they came out early and took a 21-14 lead after the first quarter. Cornelius scored 14 of his game-high 39 points in the first frame. After leading by 18 points after three quarters, the Ghosts appeared to have the game in the bag until Somerville junior Kevin Silva (22 points) took charge of the Highlander comeback. The athletic guard sliced to the hoop and helped Somerville cut the lead to two points, 76-74, with 27.5 seconds remaining. Cornelius and Westford junior Ryan Jann sank some key …
