Somerville Playground Project Gets $400K State Grant

Work on renovating a West Somerville Park should begin this summer.

The North Street Veterans Playground, which is undergoing a renovation, received a $400,000 grant from the state to renovate the playground, according to an announcement from Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities, PARC, grant will help pay for the installation of new play features, seating, a water play activity feature, a performance space, a new section of chain link fence, gates and street lights, the announcement says. The North Steeet Playground isn't the first in Somerville to receive a PARC grant. The new Chuckie Harris Park in East Somerville received $500,000 from the program for major renovations. Somerville Cultural Institutions Get $58K in State Grants

Six arts and cultural organizations received grants, according to Sen. Patricia Jehlen's office.

Somerville arts and cultural organizations received $58,690 in grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, according to an announcement sent from Somerville State Sen. Patricia Jehlen. The bulk of the grant money, $40,890, went to the Somerville Arts Council, which organizes things like PorchFest and culinary tours of Union Square and which makes local grants to artists in Somerville. Other organizations receiving grants, according to the announcement, include: Mudflat Pottery School ($4,300), Somerville Community Access Television ($2,500), Somerville Museum ($3,000), Eagle Eye Institute ($5,000) and Boston Musica Viva ($3,000).
