Curtatone on Flu Vaccines: 'There is Ample Supply Right Now' [Video]

Although the city's health department has run out, there are plenty of flu shots available in Somerville, and the city has requested more from the state, the mayor said.

Update, 2:50 p.m.: The mayor's office announced this afternoon the Cambridge Health Alliance has offered to donate 100 doses of flu vaccinations to the city. Here's the full message from the mayor's office: Earlier this afternoon, we received word from our partners at the Cambridge Health Alliance – which has several offices and clinics in the City of Somerville – extending an offer to donate 100 doses of Flulaval, an influenza vaccine for adults ages 18 and older.  The additional 100 doses will be available at flu clinics, as supplies last, on Thursday evenings – beginning today - from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Somerville Health Department, 50 Evergreen Ave.  Residents with questions about the vaccination, supply, or other general information …

Somerville Health Department Runs Out of Flu Vaccine

With cases of the flu running high, the city's health department is out of vaccinations. Flu shots should still be available at doctors offices and pharmacies.

In the middle of a season with widespread outbreaks of the flu, the Somerville Health Department has run out of flu vaccinations. The city posted the following announcement on its website: The City of Somerville's remaining flu clinics for Winter 2012-13 have been cancelled. The City received approximately 700 doses for the season, and administered the final dose of our supply on January 8th.  Residents seeking flu shots at this time are advised to contact your primary care physician, or your local pharmacy. Meanwhile, the city of Boston Wednesday declared a public health emergency as instances of the flu were ten times higher than they were last year. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said, "This is the worst flu season we’ve seen since 2009." …

Here's where to get an influenza vaccine, how to recognize symptoms and what to know about treatment if you get sick.

Flu season is coming early in parts of the United States: This time last year, flu cases were lower in Massachusetts than they are now, according to data on Google's Flu Trends. The same was true in five of the past six years, Google's data indicate. (The one outlier: In 2009-2010 there was a spike in flu-related searches in October.) In other words, in Massachusetts, flu activity is considered high now, while it was considered moderate at this time in 2011, according to Flu Trends.
