Herbstalk 2013 "Herbstal," says the listing, "is an educational event devoted to inspiring and empowering urban communities about the common and safe use of medicinal herbs." There's a market, workshops, kids activities, plant walks and more. It takes place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Center for Arts at the Armory. Backyard Havens of the Somerville Garden Club: A Self-Guided Tour Top Somerville gardeners are opening up their "backyard havens" to the public. Twenty gardens are part of the tour, which is organized by the Somerville Garden Club. Union Square Farmers Market Yes, it's finally here. The Union Square Farmers Market—everyone's favorite reason to wait in line at the Bank of America ATM for 15 minutes—opens for the season this Saturday. It runs through Nov. 23. The market features fresh produce, meats, fish, local wines and other tasty stuff. Often there's live music. It's from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it accepts SNAP EBT cards, credit and debit cards, and senior farmers market coupons, so, actually, there's really no reason to wait in line at the ATM. Boston Calling Okay, it's not in Somerville, but it's cool. This two-day festival will feature 18 bands, including Fun, The National, Of Monsters of Men and The Shins. There will be two beer gardens and a number of food trucks and restaurants. It takes place Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Memorial Day Parade Somerville's Memorial Day Parade takes place Sunday. It will include 17 marching bands, Shriners, representatives from the New England Beauty Pageant and more. It starts at 1 p.m. at Somerville High School and proceeds down Highland Avenue into Davis Square, then up Holland Street, through Teele Square, and down Broadway to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The street festivals will take place throughout the summer.
SomerStreets, now in its fourth year, is a series of street festivals. The city closes down streets to vehicles and opens them up for "cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity," according to an announcement from the city. SomerStreet festivals include music, food and children's activities and more. Here's the 2013 SomerStreets schedule, from the city: The announcement says about 5,000 people attend each SomerStreets event. PorchFest The third annual PorchFest takes place Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Over 100 bands will be playing on porches throughout the city. Check out this map to plan your PorchFest itinerary. Somerville Dog Spring Fling Som|dog, Somerville's dog group, is hosting the first ever Spring Fling on Sunday.
