Monday: College Fair at Somerville High School

Students and parents from Somerville and surrounding communities are invited to the fair, which is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Somerville High School's annual college fair takes place Monday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Somerville High School Field House. According to an announcement from Somerville Public Schools, this will be the first year the college fair is held during the fall (in years past it took place in spring). The change was made "to keep up with changing trends regarding College and Career Readiness, and to provide students with early access to a wide range of post-secondary education options," the announcement says. Representatives from around 70 colleges and universities will attend the fair, and "we’re really pleased with the level of interest in this event from colleges and universities across the U.S.,” said Carolyn Richards, …

'US News' Features Somerville High School Grads in Best Colleges Issue

The ubiquitous college guide came to Somerville and profiled eight students. The issue hits newsstands Tuesday.

The 2013 U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" issue, which is scheduled to be on shelves Tuesday, features some local faces. The popular issue of the magazine, which ranks colleges and universities, came to Somerville High School and profiled eight members of the class of 2012 for an article titled, "Success! How They Made It." Unfortunately, the article is not available online (although the college rankings are), so you'll need to get your hands on a hard copy to see the profiles. Somerville Public Schools got an early copy of the magazine and let Somerville Patch peek at the article. How Many Somerville Graduates Attend College?

Somerville high school graduates have one of the lowest college attendance rates in the region, according to numbers from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Seniors at Somerville High School graduated earlier this month, and in August, many of them will be heading off to college. We previously learned that just over half of Somerville residents have college degrees. Just how many high school graduates in Somerville go to college? Where do they go, and how do their enrollment numbers compare to those in neighboring communities? According to the latest figures available on the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website, which are from the 2009-2010 school year, Somerville had one of the lowest percentages of high school graduates attending college, at 64.8 percent. Of communities in the Somerville region, only Everett and Chelsea had lower percentages of graduates …

The recent US News & World Report college edition reports that the graduation rate at Somerville High is 81% and that 77% of the grads go on to college. I'm not sure where they (US News) got their data, but that's significantly better than the 65% reported in 2009-2010. So, either there was major improvement in the past 2 years or their numbers are off.   more ›

About Half of Somerville Residents Have a Bachelor's Degree or Higher

But how does Somerville compare to neighboring communities?

Just over half of Somerville residents who are at least 25 years old—52.3 percent—have a bachelor's degree or higher, according to 2010 Census data. That's higher than the state average, which is 38.3 percent. Of course, Somerville is located near some of the country's best universities, such as Harvard, MIT and Tufts. When it comes to higher education, how does Somerville compare? We looked at 2010 Census data for 18 cities and towns in the Somerville region and discovered that four communities in the area—Cambridge, Arlington, Winchester and Reading—have higher percentages of residents with at least a bachelor's degree. (Again, we're talking about residents who are 25 and older.) The rest have lower percentages of residents with college …

It should be noted that many of these College educated residents had their degrees and then moved into Somerville later. Check out the graduating high school seniors going on to college. Then, compare these graduates with other communities and dollars per spent on each student.   more ›
