Police Helicopter, Dogs, Apprehend Armed Car-Chase Suspects in West Somerville [Photos/Video]

Police caught three suspects and a firearm after a car chase through Somerville and Medford.

A state police helicopter and police dogs searched a normally quiet neighborhood in West Somerville Monday night for suspects, at least one of them armed, that had led police on a car chase. Police in the area around Powder House Boulevard and Leonard Street—right next to the Tufts University campus—had three suspects in custody as of about 11 p.m., and Somerville, Medford, Boston and state police were still searching the neighborhood for a possible fourth suspect. Police also discovered one handgun, according to Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department. Police: Homeless Man in Stolen Lexus Leads Cops on Car Chase

The owner of the stolen Lexus had left her car running while she stepped into store on Lower Broadway.

The owner of a 2008 Lexus SUV left her car running on Lower Broadway June 6 to step inside 104 Broadway—Tony's Foodland—according to a police report. What happened next may encourage drivers not to leave the keys in the ignition when they do errands. According to the police report, the car was stolen, ending up in the hands of a homeless man who took police on a car chase through Somerville and into Medford, a chase that ended after the Lexus crashed into four other cars and hit a retaining wall.  On top of that, the car's owner received a citation for leaving an unattended vehicle running. I'm glad that the guy who stole the Lexus was caught and arrested, but the owner of the Lexus really shouldn't have left the keys in the ignition, with the car running, in the first place. I hope that the citation teaches the owner of the banged-up Lexus a lesson.   more ›
