Fallen MIT Cop Honored by Cambridge Brewing Company With 'Collier Stout'

Somerville resident Sean Collier, who was killed in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings, now has a beer named after him.

For a limited time, Cambridge Brewing Company is pouring a batch of "Collier Stout," in honor of fallen Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer and Somerville resident Sean Collier. The beer is a dry Irish stout, according to CBC owner Phil Bannatyne, and is only available at their Cambridge location while it lasts—which might not be long. The 2,400-pint batch of Collier Stout was brewed only last week, but Bannatyne said he expects it to be tapped by the middle of this week.  In large part this is due to an event for the MIT Police Department and the Collier family that CBC held at their Cambridge location last week. "It was packed with lots of police and friends," Bannatyne said. "There were memories and stories exchanged, and we …

Food Truck Ordinance Causes Headache for Local Food Truck

A fixture at Trum Field, Moe's food truck has shut down while its owner navigates the city's new licensing procedures. He hopes the shut-down will be temporary.

When Somerville passed a new food truck ordinance in October, 2012, many hoped it would encourage the mobile eateries to do business in the city. But one local food truck operator who's been doing business in Somerville for years stopped operating Monday as soon as he received application materials for a license—a requirement under the new ordinance. Dave Stewart, a Somerville resident who runs Moe's food truck at Trum Field, hopes his hiatus will be short-lived, and if the Somerville Board of Aldermen has it's way, he'll be back in business in the upcoming week. As part of the application process called for in the new ordinance, food trucks need to prepare their food in a professional kitchen, Stewart said. Moe's sells hamburgers, …

The Alderman's recently passed ordinance to ban polystyrene--or plastic foam #6 to go ware--this new law will dwarf the hurt to food trucks story here, especially hurting all limited service, women and minority owned restaurants in the city. It's a very costly and ineffective ordinance.   more ›

Somerville Gets Report Card from Credit-Rating Agency

How did Moody's, a rating agency, grade Somerville?

Moody's Investors Service gave Somerville an Aa2 credit rating on long-term debt, according to a report issued May 30. It's the same credit rating Somerville received from Moody's in 2011 and 2012. Moody's rates long-term debt obligations on a scale from Aaa (highest) to C (lowest). According to the rating agency, "Obligations rated Aa are judged to be of high quality and are subject to very low credit risk." As recently as 2010, Somerville had a Moody's rating of Aa3. The 3 indicates a ranking at the lower end of the Aa rating. A rank of Aa1 would be at the high end of the Aa rating. In the same report, Moody's issued Somerville a MIG 1 rating on short-term debt obligations. MIG stands for "municipal investment grade," and MIG 1 is the …

East End Grille is Now Open

The new East Somerville restaurant has been getting good online reviews from customers.

So, I completely missed this, but the long-awaited East End Grille in East Somerville is now open. The restaurant opened quietly on May 29 and currently serves dinner. In the upcoming week it will begin serving lunch and Sunday brunch, according to a quick phone call to the restaurant. The restaurant, at 118 Broadway, is in the former location of Khoury's, a bar known for being a little rough around the edges. Yelp users have been giving East End Grille some good reviews. One reviewer ordered sweet potato chips, mussels in a saffron broth, homemade fettuccine with peas and a lemon bar dessert. Others talked about a good beer and drinks list and reasonable prices. Check out the reviews here. The restaurant is still working on its website, …
