Police: 2012 Saw Fewer Bad Traffic Accidents, Enforcement Efforts Credited

Somerville police issued more tickets, and the city saw fewer accidents, in 2012 than in 2011, according to police.

The Somerville Police Department Wednesday said the city saw a 23 percent decline in serious traffic accidents from 2011 to 2012. What's more, police say stepped up traffic enforcement efforts led to the decline. According to an announcement from the police department, there were 350 serious traffic accidents in 2012. A serious accident is one that results in personal injury or damage to a vehicle of $1000 or more, the announcement says. In 2011, there were 455 serious accidents, the announcement says. That's a 23 percent decline from one year to the next. Meanwhile, police issued 11,076 moving violations in 2012 compared to 8,239 in 2011, the announcement says. Inman Square is Worst Bike-Crash Site in Massachusetts

Somerville is home to two of the top-ten worst bicycle-crash sites in the state and one of the worst pedestrian-crash sites. The city was also home to two of the worst 200 car-crash sites in the state.

The worst site for bicycle crashes in the state is the area around Inman Square that straddles Somerville and Cambridge, according to the "2010 Top Crash Locations Report," which was released by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in September. The third worst bicycle-crash site in Massachusetts was the area around Porter Square, mostly in Cambridge, but partly in Somerville. What's more, Davis Square, in Somerville, was the fifth worst site for pedestrian crashes in the state, the report says. Accident on I-93 North in Somerville Closes Lanes

Massachusetts State Police said two lanes are closed and there are minor injuries.

An accident on Interstate 93 in Somerville has closed at least two lanes of traffic on the highway Wednesday afternoon, according to a Tweet from Massachusetts State Police. At 2:51 p.m., @MassStatePolice tweeted, "MSP on scene of a crash 93 N/B in Somerville. Minor injuries. 2 left lanes closed." According to scanner transmissions monitored by Patch, the accident was a rollover that occured just before the Mystic Avenue ramp.

Rollover Accident with Injuries on I-93 South

At least one person was ejected from a car in an accident on Interstate 93 near the Mystic Avenue exit Tuesday afternoon.

A two-car accident near exit 30 on Interstate 93 southbound Tuesday afternoon resulted in a rollover, and at least one person was ejected from a car, according to fire department scanner transmissions.  The accident happened around 3:30 p.m., and Somerville and Boston Fire Departments responded to the accident according to the transmissions. Medford Patch, over Twitter, reported the accident happened near exit 30, which is near the border of Somerville and Medford, and the two right lanes  of the highway were closed. Somerville Patch will update this story when more information becomes available.

Somerville Man Killed Inside O'Neill Tunnel In Boston

Authorities said the accident illustrates the danger of stopping in Big Dig tunnels.
