Plus, Saint Patrick -- he wasn't even Irish!
Today is Thursday, March 17. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Here are five (Irish-inspired) things you need to know today. 1. First, the bad news: St. Patrick – he wasn’t Irish. According to a story told by local writer Jim Morrison, he was born in either Southern Scotland, Western England or maybe even Wales. Some time after he turned 16, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery by Irish marauders. You can read more about the man who became the patron saint of the Emerald Isle and whose life (and death, to be exact) we honor today on Charlestown.Patch.com. Pretty interesting stuff. 2. Now, good news: There are a number of St. Paddy’s Parties at pubs around town tonight and we’ll have a full list for you in our Patch Picks later today. 3. More good…

Check out a free family film at the library Saturday, attend a free craft night Friday at Artisans Asylum, and free your mind to come up with cool ideas for this year’s ArtsUnion festival lineup--they’ve put out a call for event producers.
Have a great idea for a public event? The new Union Square Main Streets newsletter is out and it’s filled with useful news including a call to motivated, creative minds to propose events for this year’s Somerville Arts Council's ArtsUnion line-up. If you’ve enjoyed events like the Fluff Festival, the Rock & Roll Yard Sale or Bloom, which brought a field of paper flowers to Prospect Hill last year, and you have an idea of your own that you’d like to volunteer to produce, they want to hear from you. The Arts Council “helps with publicity, provides support and base funding to make the program happen,” says the notice. You bring the great idea and the willpower to make it happen. A subscription costs about $3 per toothbrush. Info here. The tip also pointed out that any toothbrush may be recycled “in the #5 bin at your local Whole Foods.” (Somerville does not …
