The team's roster includes Olympic gold medalists and national team players with World Cup experience.
The Boston Breakers, one of the top women's soccer teams in the country, will play their first home game at Somerville's Dilboy Stadium Friday night to a sellout crowd. The team's roster includes players who have won Olympic Gold medals and played in World Cups with the United States National Team. Kristine Lilly, a former Breakers player and currently an assistant coach, has more caps with the U.S. National Team than any other player in U.S. soccer history—men or women. The team has players from Australia's national team, also with World Cup experience, and it's filled with up-and-coming stars who've played with the U.S. Under-23 National Team and at top college programs. The 5K road race begins at 9:45 a.m., and race-day registration is available.
The 10th annual M.O.M.'s Run and Walk for Cancer takes place Sunday morning, and it will be followed by a party held in the back room and parking lot of The Burren featuring food from Redbones and drinks from Harpoon. The Patriots linebacker and the Tufts University football team staged a simulated "draft day" for 8-year-old Riley Roman, who's undergone major brain surgery to treat a tumor.
New England Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovitch visited Tufts University's Somerville campus Wednesday to help stage a special event for an 8-year-old boy whose life has been turned upside down by a brain tumor. Riley Roman, from South Hadley, was recently diognosed with a rare primitive neuroectodermal tumor, known as a PNET, which can spread quickly. The boy has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy at Children's Hospital Boston, and due to the severity of his treatment he's living at the Ronald McDonald House. Ninkovitch became friends with Riley during a visit to the hospital, and the two have remained in touch. The women's tackle football team moves into a bye week having dominated the first part of the season.
The Boston Militia, a national-championship women's tackle football team that plays home games in Somerville, defeated the Keystone Assault 31-0 Saturday. The Assault are from Dillsburg, Penn., outside Harrisburg. In defeating the Assault, the Boston Militia improved their record to 3-0 as they go into a bye week. Of the five games left in the season, two are against teams the Militia have already defeated: The New York Sharks (whom the Militia beat 64-6 in the opening game of the season) and The Philadelphia Liberty Belles (whom the Militia beat 59-0 on April 21). John Alan Roderick received the 2012 Coach's Award; Little Leaguers and tee-ballers marched in a parade.
Somerville Little League celebrated it's 60th year with opening day ceremonies held Saturday. To celebrate the occasion, Little League and tee-ball players marched from Somerville High School to Conway Park on Somerville Avenue, as they do every year to commemorate the beginning of the season. This year, the league gave the 2012 Coach's Award to John Alan Roderick, who's coached Somerville Little League for 19 years. "It was a surprise," said, Roderick, explaining he didn't know he was going to receive the award. The two-time national champions of women's football are off to a fast start at the beginning of 2012.
The Boston Militia, who play home games at Somerville's Dilboy Stadium, defeated the Philadelphia Libery Belles 59-0 Saturday, accorting to tweets from the Boston Militia and @backseatcoach, a women's football fan who follows the team. The Boston Militia are two-time consecutive champions of the Women's Football Alliance, and they're already off to a strong start in the 2012 season. According to the team's website, the defending national champs defeated the New York Sharks 64-6 in the first game of the season, held April 14. David Bedoya, an elite runner who originally comes from Spain, finished 21st overall, and Kate Hails finished 40 on the list of female runners.
Somerville had a pretty good day at the Boston Marathon. Six Somerville runners finished in under three hours, and one, David Bedoya, finished in 21st place overall (19th in the men's race), according to the Boston Athletic Association website.
