The Somerville Fire Department's five fire stations are staffed by 152 full-time firefighters, of which roughly half…More are trained EMTs. Because they respond to both fire and medical emergencies, their entire fleet—which includes five fire engines, two ladder trucks and one tower ladder truck—is equipped with life support equipment such as defibrillators. The department is also equipped for special ops, hazmat ops and water rescue.
Stations are located in Winter Hill (266 Broadway), which also serves as their headquarters; Spring Hill (265 Highland Ave.), Union Square (255 Somerville Ave.), Teele Square (6 Newbury St.), and at the Lowell St. Station (corner of Lowell and Somerville Ave.). The Fire Prevention Office is located at the DPW at 1 Franey Road.
The all-volunteerSomerville Auxiliary Fire Department provides support for both City firefighters and police via three squads that provide lighting for emergencies, water pumping during flooding, and on-scene rehabilitation services.
Fire Department Office hours are Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm. Emergency services are, of course, 24/7.
The Somerville Police Department employs over 140 uniformed members in 10 divisions, which are also supported by the…More all-volunteer Somerville Auxiliary Police Department. Approximately half of the force serves in the Uniformed Patrol Division, which answers over 45,000 calls for service per year. Currently, Acting Police Chief Michael Cabral leads the department, and in late 2010, incoming Police Chief Thomas Pasquarello will take the helm.
The department is strongly committed to the concept of community policing, which encourages every officer to maintain strong ties to the community. To that end, seven Neighborhood Police Officers are each assigned to one of the city's seven wards, where they patrol, take part in events and stay in close contact with community leaders.
In addition to police headquarters in Union Square, two neighborhood substations also make officers more available to residents. The East Substation is located in East Somerville at 81 Broadway and the West Substation is in Teele Square at 1154 Broadway.
Many nonemergency services are also provided by the department including child seat safety checks, investigation of traffic safety complaints and finger printing.
