East Somerville Community School (temporary locations)
617-625-6600 ext. 6500
This K-8 school's mission is "to provide a total educational experience of the highest quality, nurtured within an atmosphere of high expectations, mutual respect, and commitment to excellence." Their motto is "Every Student Can Succeed."
The student body comprises speakers of over 16 different languages, and 73.9% of students have a first language other than English. The school celebrates this diversity and emphasizes multicultural programs and understanding. It is the home of Unidos, a two-way language and cultural immersion program that teaches Spanish to English speakers and English to Spanish speakers.
Afterschool programs are offered, and the PTA is active and involved, focusing both on student issues and offering parent workshops. The social-emotional curriculum, Second Step, is taught to all students in grades 5-8 and lessons are given to grades 1 and 2. Principal Dr. Holly Hatch leads the school.
